Entitlements

I have always thought entitlements are too general in description. I believe they ought to be divided into at least 2 divisions. Earned and emergency. Earned would be like mine for retirement from the U S Navy and emergency would be for persons that need temporary help. What are your thoughts or ideas.:)

I would agree. With regards to say welfare, I think we should as a society should help people out.
I do however think there needs to be a time limit for providing that service.
Once people realize there is a time limit, then they are more motivated to do something for themselves.
This would only apply to abled body people. People with diabilities should have help provided to them. We could do better with that if we didn't waste money on the people that don't need it.

My thoughts exactly, that is why I titled it temporary relief. One of our Son's was on unemployment for a while and about 2 weeks before benefits were to expire he found a job. Duh

I am ok with unemployment because workers pay in to that system. That is different than welfare, snap and all these other programs.

How often do we hear " My unemployments running out soon, I better start looking for a job." ?

Umm...no. Now they say "my unemployment is running out and I need an attorney to get me on social security disability". If I say "I am mentally unstable", I am in.

I do have a problem with the extensions that they've given unemployment benefits tho .. It moves it beyond earned benefit and more to a welfare benefit.

It does but the dollar number is much less than people on welfare. You start adding in free housing, free medical, free utilities, free food, free education, free internet, free phones, free cable, free clothes (although it only provided 50.00 dollar shoes instead of the 200 Micheal Jordon shoes) and the endless list that we all pay for.

I think it was a shell game really....unemployment dollars comes from the Feds...If they had let them expire people would have moved unto the States payroll instead....just the politicians saving votes and their home states budgets....

Only part of the money for unemployment comes from the Fed. Most comes from the state.
Same with workers comp. Those are administered through the state.

ok...that is where I am getting messed up...In Canada U.I. Is a Federal program only...workers comp is a provincial program. That is why Canada does not extend benefits if anything they shorten them and thro them to the provincial dogs....

And your point is?

I have little respect for those that treat unemployment as a paid vacation.

I've been laid off. It has never taken me over two or three days to find a job.
Maybe I have a good work ethic.
Maybe I'm nuts..

It probably falls somewhere in the middle.

I didn't go out and take any piece of crap job... I tried first in my field of interest and went from there....I was never really without a job too long myself....except for one time I was laid off with a recall date in 4 months....

I haven't had crappy jobs. I'be been leased to run of the mill carriers (Heartland Express where I worked myself up into a not talked about dedicated situation, Watkins, the LTL doubles people which I throughly enjoyed, and Trl Transit.)
Jobs that people will work their whole carrier and be happy.
This is when I wasn't working my good jobs.
If you have a CDL, a clean record, and want to pay your bills, you should NEVER be out of work.

Got my CDL A when Firestone threw 1500 of us to the streets when Bridgestone bought them out....used some of my severance pay to get the driver training...

Maybe you knew unemployment wasn't enough to pay the bills. Good thinking!
