Elk herds thriving in Eastern Kentucky

I didn't know that they were even native to KY!

Elk had been hunted to extinction in Kentucky since the 1850's. Beginning in 1997, the Kentucky Dept of Wildlife and volunteer groups of enthusiasts began re-introducing elk from our western states. Elk are doing exceedingly well on reclaimed mining lands. Almost all of Eastern Kentucky counties now have sustainable herds of elk. In fact, because of Kentucky's efforts, some elk have expanded into Virginia and West Virginia... and possibly southern Ohio. It's a wildlife management success story.
