As was noted in the article, nearly 70 percent of all vehicles have backup cameras offered already. Historically, safety legislation and regulations have followed the automaker's leads in their implementation. Everything from windshield wipers to seat belts were ubiquitous long before they became mandated and regulated. Backup cameras are no different.

I dunno.....How much is your granddaughter or grandson life worth to you?......if you save just one life...what is that value to you?....

That depends on how much I can get from the guy who hits my grandkids.

Sorry... a strawman scenario deserves a sarcastically retarded response.

So windshield wipers and seat belts would have been a straw man argument back then?

P.S. I don't think your response was sarcastic

Having had the advantage of seeing a backup camera in action on a friend's car, I think a good argument can be made for the general usefulness of the device. Not only might it save a life, but for those of us in vans it can make parallel parking a bit easier, not to mention giving you a "heads up" if any debris is behind you when you start backing. It might be worth a couple hundred to retro-fit my van with one of these things. I'll have to think about that.

It is impossible to stop all accidents. It can be too expensive to try. It is what it is. As long as there are people who do things there will be accidents and a certain percentage of those will be fatal. Nothing can change that fact.

Reasonable steps can be taken, but there does come a time when there is no cost benefit to a given solution.

I have rented cars that had them. At least in those it made little difference to backing up and were even a bit distracting. They are a GOOD OPTION for those who need, or want them. Mandates are getting old.

I think the camera would take away complete attention from the task of backing up....what about the side action like approaching people or traffic, one could get too focused on watching that darned TV screen....for a small vehicle like a car IMO it is a waste....there is such a SMALL blind zone....AND it helps make people lazy..forgoing the need to check the back of car before reversing...

No... the straw man is all da widdo chirlins who dis will save. It's simple. If you care enough about your grand children, YOU will make sure you have backing cameras... not that it gets legislated FOR you.

It was sarcastic for me. I don't think that way; tho a bunch of others are sure to.

I have been driving for more than 45 years. I have not backed over a kid yet. Looking first seems to work. IF I find that I am having a problem backing up, I will then CHOOSE to get one. Mandates are getting old.

We put one on our D unit.
Wouldn't have a unit this large w/o one. How often have you pulled into a wrong driveway and quickly reversed ?
