I saw a story on CNN news last night about trucking companies offering $11 an hour for people to sit in the shotgun seat so trucks can use the HOV lanes. They didn´t name the cities. Anybody hear of that,or see that story? They did mention that some drivers were using inflatable dolls, but also were getting caught and bieng asseed heavy fines, so now they´re going to live "sitter riders".

That is Funny, They must really want there trucks moving in the fast last really bad. To put a blow up doll in the jump seat is way to Funny.

In the late '90s, I was living in southern California. In the news there was a story of a pregnant woman using the carpool lane there and being ticketed. She fought the ticket. Her defense was that the fetus in her womb was the rider.

She won!

When I lived in the Wash DC burbs in the early '80's, all manor of ploys were attempted in order to defeat the HOV lane regulations. One of these gimmicks was employed by local trucking companies who hired ridealongs. It didn't last long as they soon restricted commercial vehicles, less busses, from the HOV lanes.

Every HOV setup I've paid any attention to prohibits commercial vehicles other than transit busses. I can't see this being cost effective just to gain an hour or so sometimes in some cities.

Just an addition... not just transit busses... HOV Lanes also allow passenger charter busses. Private "Not For Hire" coaches are iffy... that is to say that a band bus or bus motor home is tempting the law to pull it over. Regular transit busses that run line runs and do in-town work and seated passenger tour busses are allowed in HOV Lanes though. I run thru Atlanta and other large cities along the east coast regularly in a 45 foot 57 passenger coach... in the HOV Lane.
