Fuel consumption is roughly the same for both gas and diesel Espar heaters. It all depends on how cold it is, and at what level the heater spends most of it's time. For 8 hours, half a gallon, probably. Even less if the van is well insulated.

Airtronic D2
Heat Level - Gal/hr
Boost - .07
High - .06
Medium - .04
Low - .03

Airtronic D4
Heat Level - Gal/hr
Boost - .13
High - .10
Medium - .07
Low - .03

Boost level lasts a few minutes to quickly heat things up, then it drops down and automatically cycles between High, Medium and Low. You can see the D4 uses almost twice the fuel at each level than the D2, but the D4 has twice the airflow of the D2, which means it spends more time at lower heating levels than the D2. So where the D2 may spend a lot of time on High heating, the D4 will spend most of that time at Low or Medium, so fuel consumption ends up being about the same for both, it's just the D4 ends up not having to work as hard.

If it's like 15 or 20 degrees outside and the van is semi-well insulated, you can figure on about half a gallon for 8 hours. Mine goes through just about a gallon every 15 hours at between 10-30 degrees.
