Early or not

My husband and I have this argument about once a month and I'm just looking for other opinions. We drive for Panther and with the 47 mph dispatch there is always extra time and I say we should always deliver direct unless told to deliver at appointment time. He says when there is a bunch of time built in it's okay to drag our feet a little. Take for instance our current load. They gave us 40 hours to go 1400 miles. I know that we can drive it in 28 hours and I would like to go ahead and get it done. He wants to take our time and still be there early but he says there is no need to get there 12 hours early.
What does everyone else do in this situation?

Thanx

If it specifically says do not deliver early then drag your feet, but if it doesn't then we always go straight through. That way it gives you more time to get on a board and get your next load. The longer you drag your feet on the current load is time taken away from getting another one. :)

As a solo I have the same 47mph timetable but less overall surplus time due to the shorter distances. I generally only drive 60-62mph regardless of speed limit. Even so, I can still be there early. I get there as early as I can while still maintaining my fuel/$ conserving pace. It is much better to spend any extra time after POD working up the board than before POD. That can make the difference on the next job being today or tomorrow.

Unless the run takes me over the weekend or gives me a lot of time (like the one I had the other day, 18 hours to deliver 300 miles away) I would make every effort to deliver as fast as possible as Leo pointed out.

But I would not drag my feet for anyone, even if I had a specific time to deliver, you never know what could happen a long the way and it is better to sit 10 or 15 miles away from a delivery for a few hours or even a half of a day than to have something happen along the way and be late.

The early bird catches the worm...There are only 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week..I compress as much as I can in to it.

I always get there as quick as I can on the pickup and on the drop. Even though lately I pickup at the time on the QC as I have waited at the pu when to earlier before. On the drop though it is always better to get there as quick as possible where you can be ready for the next load - even though I have never ever never been offered two loads in one day it does give me the chance to move up the board for the next day.

Always direct!!! that way if anything happens on the way you may have time to get it fixed and still be on time. No tow bill to the consignee to pay for. Now I'm ready for the next load. Time is money. I will quite often call the consignee to get good local directions and tell them that I have a expedited load for them and ask them what there recieving hours are, and ask if I need an appointment. I write this info down and then transfer it to computer to reference later when needed. All in ABC order for easy access.

I'm a Panther solo, and I'll generally go ahead and deliver early if I can, for the above mentioned reasons. The quicker you deliver, the quicker you can get your next load, etc. Also, often the consignee (and customer, if different) is very appreciative of the speedy service. On the other hand, being a solo, on long trips I won't sacrifice safety in order to deliver early. If I have plenty of extra time to make the delivery, I'll take my time in getting there, stop off for a nap when I need it, etc. And there are cases where an early delivery is actually not wanted.

I just came off a 1307 mile run, Laredo to SC. Had tons of extra time to make the delivery. 1630 Monday pickup with an 0700 Wednesday delivery, 38 1/2 hours. At 47 MPH it's a 29 hour run, but that would have made the delivery time at 2200 on Tuesday, when shipping and receiving was closed, so they scheduled it for the next morning. In real world driving it's about 21 hours, which meant if I had driven it straight through I could have made the delivery the next afternoon, but a solo driving 21 hours straight in insane, and it would have been closer to 24 hours because Atlanta construction sits in wait near the end of the tip, and Atlanta at noon, or anytime during the day, is not pleasant under the best of circumstances.

So, I took my time. Slept about 7-8 hours in Houston Monday night, drove a long way Tuesday, then slept a little while in Montgomery, trying to time it by hitting Atlanta between 1-2 AM. I hit Atlanta at 0130, then drove on up to the delivery. I didn't expect them to be open at 0510, but they had just opened at 0500, so I made the delivery 2 hours early.

In this case, as is the case more often than you might think, if I had made the delivery the previous afternoon or evening, the person who was expecting the delivery would not have been there and the freight may have gotten misplaced or lost at the consignee. I mentioned that I could have delivered it the previous day, and wondered if that would have been OK. She (cons) said that she was glad that I didn't, because this was a JIT thing and if it had come in early there would have almost certainly been a delay on the line while they had to search for it in receiving. By making the delivery on-time Wednesday morning, she was able to take it directly to where they would be needing it in a few hours.

So, it depends on the situation. Generally I'll deliver early, but after a while you kind of get to know which ones can and cannot, and which ones should and should not, be delivered early. In almost all cases, though, my goal is to never arrive any later than 1-2 hours before the scheduled delivery time, even to places that I know for sure aren't open that early. I'd much rather sit for an hour or two at delivery than be late due to unexpected construction or something along the way.

I'm a firm believer in getting there early. If I can get to the shipper an hour before the scheduled pick up I will. I'd rather wait at the shipper on the chance the freight is ready than hang around a truck stop.

Same goes for the consignee. If I get there before they open I will sleep at their dock or a safe place near by. Even on long weekend runs I will get as far as I can the first day. For me mentally, it makes it seem easier to knock off as many miles early in the trip. And it usually gives me a full night of sleep before a Monday morning delivery.

The more time you use driving gives you an extra cushion to absorb delays due to traffic, weather, poor directions, breakdowns and every other possible thing that can get thrown at you.

After 10 years I still have a 100% on time record. I attribute this to running steady, getting to the shipper early and some good luck.

Staying on it steady would be my choice as well. If you unload early it just moves you to the next load quicker. And as mentioned, if you break down, the more cushion you have the better.
No time will equal instant tow even for the smallest of things.
The majority of repairs can be handled in several hours if they are minor in nature.

ALWAYS deliver direct!

Why?

If you have a mechanical issue you have time built into the load to get it fixed and maybe still make you appointment time

If you hit adverse weather or road conditions your chances are better to be on time

If you deliver early as a team, you will get another load quicker which equals MORE MILES and MORE MONEY

IF you are late on a load due to mechanical issues, weather, etc. and "dragged your feet" but could have delivered on time IF you went direct Panther dispatch will and should affect your on time percentage. After all DRIVER error is to blame for not going direct, this is why they use the 47 mph rules plus 15 minutes.

I think the lady in this instance wins the debate hands down!

After all this is EXPEDITE. Deliver quickly and safely then move on.

I would show this to your partner

It's not a GOTCHA or I TOLD YA SO kind of thing

You got some good input there from other people of why you should go direct.

Another reason to attempt an early delivery: even if the consignee is not open, if you can't park onsite, and must drive somewhere else to wait, you will know exactly where you're going in the morning, and how much time you'll need to get there. That knowledge might afford you a bit more time to sleep than you would have if you weren't sure of the directions, or the distance. Since time to sleep can be scarce, why waste it?

Often if you go direct you can take your 10 hour break at the cons and be ready with full hours after the delivery. That's more important for a solo than a team of course. I've even heard of solos who arrive at say 0300 for an 0700 delivery and at 1100 show full hours again. I'm not suggesting that's the way to do it, just making an observation.
