Highway mileages drop in E85 may not justify the cost at the pump. According to this...

We put our 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe FFV through our full series of fuel-economy and acceleration tests while running on each fuel. When running on E85 there was no significant change in acceleration. Fuel economy, however, dropped across the board. In highway driving, gas mileage decreased from 21 to 15 mpg; in city driving, it dropped from 9 to 7 mpg. You could expect a similar decrease in gas mileage in any current FFV."

Fuel mileage drop is to be expected. That's because alcohol burns at a different air-fuel ratio than gasoline does.

I used to run model engines in model power boats, and as a result of that I got an education from R/C engine guru Clarence Lee. He and his friends did some tests because it was reported that white gasoline made engines run longer than glow-fuel does. Turns out to be true-- but it also made the engines run hotter.

Gasoline burns (in engines) at about a 14 part air to 1 part gasoline ratio. Alcohol burns at about 8 parts air to 1 part alcohol. You can see from that that it takes a lot more alcohol to make the engine run, and as a result your fuel mileage plummets. Ethanol isn't as good a fuel as the methanol that is used in pure-alcohol burning motors either, turns out that without a little help-- from gasoline-- ethanol can hardly be considered engine fuel. We get away with using it at all because it's mixed with gasoline. Ethanol makes a great base for White Lightning though--- make me wonder how much Moonshine they had to drink before deciding to put it in fuel.

way to go EPA burn more fuel ... Goes along with Biodeisel as well.... Higher the bio rating lower my mpg's drop

They knew decades ago that ethanol was a dead end. The farm lobby kept the subsidies (welfare) to the farmers alive because it was big money.

It actually takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than it contains.
