Has anyone heard anything about this?

FMCSA Trims Inspection Reports | Go By Truck Global News

If the article is correct it sounds like as of next week we would no longer have to fill out the dvir report. We would still be required to do the inspections but only complete the report if something was found during the inspection.

I wonder if this is a true report since I've never heard anything about it till now?

Been talked about here in the past and your article looks legit. I can think of countless other ways I can save time and carriers also..
Properly passed under pressure by some large carrier trying to save money by not processing reports?
I imagine once again any savings properly won't be passed on to trucks or drivers.

Deville: that's the big question. Personally, I would continue to flag it, just as a CYA measure, because if you do it, you need to log it.
The new rule just omits the DVIR form - a major time & labor savings for the carriers, but less so for individual drivers.
