Driver Pay

I'm an O/o in the bulk tanker side of things so I have no experience on in the expeditor side.
Anyways my brother was medically discharged from the military about 6 months ago and has had a hard time getting a job
around here.
Currently he has no interest in getting a class A.
So Ive been looking into other avenues to help put him to work.
Fedex called me about putting on a van with them, which my my brother has expressed interest in.

The questions I have about Vans are

1) How are drivers paid. Percentage or do most owners pay their drivers by the mile?

2) Are van drivers paid as IC on a 1099 or as an employee?

3) How do owners provide drivers with funds to cover repairs on the road? comcheck - company credit card

In case things don't work out with my brother and I have to get another driver I want to have an idea how other owners do it.

Percentage.

1099

3) How do owners provide drivers with funds to cover repairs on the road? comcheck - company credit card

Either one can be used but using a credit card over the phone might be best, regular mechanics may not accept Comchecks.

On a side note please make sure you are not pushing your brother unless he needs it. I am not saying you are doing anything wrong since I do not know your family but when my brother got out of the Marines after 2 tours in Iraq he just needed some time to adjust to civilian life. He did go through a bit of a depression after realizing he will not be experiencing the same comradere he had in the military. It might be difficult for your brother as it appears he was not ready to leave but I do thank him for his service.

Generally its a 60/40 split. He who gets the 60 pays the fuel and the surcharge
