downshifting tips for eaton-fuller 7 spd non-sync

Just replaced my '99 FL-70 Spicer ES066b tranny with the above after the 3rd failure of the Spicer. After being used to the pickup style shifting method for better than 500,000 miles I'm having some real problems getting the hang of downshifting this new Eaton-Fuller. I'm doing ok on the upshifting but "grind city" on the downshifting. On both I've been told to use the clutch only to get out of the current gear and then use only accelerator pedal to get to the next one. I'm getting more than frustrated after 2 weeks with this new one! Any suggestions??

When shifting down, just use the clutch. When shifting up, use the clutch, put it in neutral, then rev it a little. While the rpms are higher, try to ease it in gear...should slip right in. Takes some practice, and you will grind it...but that should do it.

Exactly correct you are basically double pumping clutch pedal too align teeth in trans with engine speed. It may sound harsh but I believe there is a video at the local library or even contact your dealer for a video from Eaton. It may take your dealer a little digging but they have the resourse in there sales material. Just a matter of digging it up. Nothing to be embarrassed about. We all started out grinding a pound or two!

I can remember when I went to TT school for my cdl that the instructor asked me if I could drive stick. I said of course and he said "too bad" You're going to have to forget about what you know and start over. You'll get the hang of it after awhile. Just remember that you can't force it into gear so if you blip the accelerator a little and with the slightest of pressure let it walk itself into the gears. After awhile you'll have the different RPM ranges figured out so you'll be doing it without thinking. Good Luck...If you have the time and don't mind asking around I'm sure that there would be some people who wouldn't mind taking a little drive and show you how it's done. You're best bet would probably be with another expediter they seem to be an awfully friendly bunch and speaking from experience I have had quite a few share info with me. And I'm not even driving...I have to wait until this spring before I'm out there again...can't wait really dislike my present job but promised to stay on through the winter...Good luck and remember we all were gear jammers when we started out

I agree with Glen. Use the double clutch method to get use to it. As you are learning, pay particular attention to your rpms and where you are shifting. In a short time you will be able to shift without the clutch. Remember to compensate when climbing a hill or going down one.
