Dogs and Fedex

Okay, I have been with the CC for almost as long as the A Team, and been on the side reading posts here for a few years now(yes just decided to start posting).
Fed Ex had a customer complain about 10 years ago when a contractor took her dog out on the customers property to do its business ... not a smart move. but we do not even service that account anymore(rates got too cheap so the loads were almost always turned down).
We have been doing this type of work in trucking for over 20 years now and this is the first carrier who has the no pet policy. at the other companies were with, we always under stood that at times one of us would have to wait at the gate as pets were a no no. And it was not problem! and when we came over here it was without a pet that was understood.
Now at the recent contractors meeting the subject of pets was brought up and the reply for on high was they were considering it. If they want to look at it from a security standpoint,a truck is almost 50 times less likely to be stolen or hijacked where pets are present. This is from F.B.I crime statistics relating to cargo thefts. And the size of the dog does not matter.I guess no one likes to be bit!
Plus it seems like it would be great thing for Driver retention as many of the well qualified teams that have been here Since the Roberts days have been leaving due to the Feds new policies. And as far as inspections go I do know that even someone who has been thru training HAS to get certified in each state he or she will be performing inspections. Being from Texas I know this to be true as it is state law that no one can perform an inspection on a commercial vehicle weather a state or fed inspection without being state certified( I know as Iam licensed in the state of Texas do do inspections.
I do not think that he is "checking or searching" sleepers but if he is there is NO way he will ever look in mine as it is a violation of my rights(according to my attorney Who I did call).
We have lost so many good contractors here because of new policy's that are only put in place to protect the company, save the company money or make them more at our expense like tying to get everyone on flat rate while still charging the customer the same . This too was tried years ago and all they got were loads that would not get moved, and new drivers and contractors that never should have been been "white glove"
Dont get me wrong this is where will will be untill this truck (our last )is paid off in another 2 years and then .. hmmm don't know yet maybe they will see the writing on the wall and show more appreciation for their contractors and we may stay another 7 years...Be Safe all!

Are you bringing this up as an in house, FedEx policy discussion? Or are you bringing up this discussion for the general audience of the open forum? Just curious.

Good question! It does need clarification so we know if we can respond before it gets locked. Beware the Power of Purple!!!!

Here is the doggy scoop.

I understand what you are saying but the pet rule came from not a customer complaining but because FedEx decided to become a qualified carrier for two companies which operated under the GxP quality guidelines - more specifically the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). These companies sat down with the sales staff at FedEx Memphis and spelled out their requirements and no pets in the trucks (any trucks) was one of the requirements.

One of these companies is Pfizer. They have a VERY strict rule about pets on their property to the point that a senior director at their Morris Plains facility brought his little ****zu dog with him onto the property and they had an absolute cow over it when it got out. The guy left the company a month after this happened and many think it wasn't the fact that he had a near perfect company record but he just screwed up and they didn't like it.

The other thing, Terry does not do DOT inspections, he was trained to do truck inspections within the DOT guidelines which means he does them for FedEx. I think Tri-state has a roving inspector too.

Yes I know Pfizer was one but like i said we do not do their loads anymore as too many were turned down. And I know terry does the inspections for FEDEX _and I do not have a problem with that as long as it is on company property. Not when it's on my own time.Like at a truckstop or when we are doing a log restart.

The main issue to me about pets is what is spelled out in the contract. If you agree to no pets, then...no pets. If you have a contract that allows pets, grab the pooper scooper and have at it.

DriverX,

You mentioned pets as a topic at a drivers meeting. Are you saying that White Gloves are trying to get pet waivers?

eb

P.S. congrats on the new post count.

S I understand it , like i said it was under consideration by White Glove..but a lot of times things have been "under consideration" but nothing has ever come of it.

I got it.

The problem why they lost a lot of the work wasn't about the turn downs as much as it was about another issue with the carrier and the downsizing within the industry. The carrier related problems are well discussed within the other lead groups and because they still do a lot of business with Pfizer and other pharma companies through SC and Freight, they still maintain the standard company wide.

If someone wants to hijack a truck little fido ain't gonna stop them The best defense is paying attention to what is going on around you. A properly guarded truck is even LESS likely to get stolen.

Try to hijack me and find out!! :p I just find this entire thread amazing. The rules be the rules. You KNOW the rules before you start. Don't like them? Don't start. You sign the contract, follow it. No reason to whine or complain about it. Hate it that much? Leave. Simple. End of story.
