DOD and Twik Cards

Just a quick question. Is it possible to get a DOD card and Twik card before you start working for a company or does the contract need to be in place first? We have clearance for one major defense contractor but I don't think this will get us through. Thanks in advance for the info.

You can get a Twic without be signed on with anyone. It can take up to 3 or 4 months. Mine took about a month because I had just gotten hazmat. If you have a recent hazmat endorsement where you had to do finger printing and back ground check, that will speed up the Twic process. It may be faster now. When I got my Twic, the big rush was on. Truckers and Boat Captains doing port business had to have Twic. Living in Baltimore, we had a lot of both, so the lines were long. I suggest going on line to fill out your app. When you get to the Twic office, that will speed things up considerably for you. Caution, don't loose your pin if you do it on line!

Sorry, can't help on the DOD.

the DOD thing is a carrier specific thing. If your carrier is a approved vendor, then they can tell you how to get started with the process.

as Greg said, you have to be on with a carrier that does qualified government loads. The DOD is good for 10 years, and will follow you if you go to another carrier

since the TWIC card came into effect, since I don't have one,I've lost just 1 load because of it.Anytime I see a load go out that I think should be mine,I check to see whay I didn't get it,and was told just 1 time about the TWIC card. Also you can usually get an escort, and Ive had that happen, since I don't have the TWIC card

When I was with another carrier and went to some military bases, my Twic speed things up, especially at Portsmouth navel shipyard. Dover air force base and Fort Drum I think all took it. I have been on maybe 2 or 3 others that didn't care about it.

I had to go to. CSX roundhouse at a rail yard that wanted it. Don't remember where that was.

You know this is one of the issues with our dysfunctional TSA, there are too many cards. Get one card with different levels of clearance and it won't be an issue twic/FAST/security.

If you are going to CIA in either Portsmouth or Portland Naval Shipyard without DOD or TWIC, prepare to spend about 1 to 2 hours doing paperwork and waiting after you finish the paperwork. DOD gets in the fastest. Twic you have one form to fill out, lock up you laptop, phone, accident camera etc... and get escorted. Without either one, if I remember right, the driver had 5 forms to fill out and then wait for them to come get him. Just my experience.

Is Twic worth while having? I don't think so unless your running containers or go to ports a lot. I got mine because of Captains license for boats to keep it current.

If I didn't have that, I probably wouldn't have one.

As far as I know, only if you are going to a high security area then ya need something to speed things up.

Been to Ft Bragg, Camp Lejune and didn't need one. If going to central receiving at Dover don't need one, but if going else where in Dover it helps.

Been to the base southeast of Richmond, don't remember the name (dang I'm getting old) lol, they didn't care I had one. Just did their thing and on I went.

Seems there is no continuity when going to a military base. Good thing I guess. Would keep the bad guys guessing.

Like I said, its not mandatory to have one, just speeds up the process if going to a high security area. Atleast to the ones I went to.
