Is that for diesel fuel? Or gas, too... It's a shame that the local businesses have to charge the tax, then get hurt by the boycotts.. But I guess they need to let their local governments know that.

As the conventional oil guy says to the synthetic oil guy, "Not anymore."

New story in the local paper about it. The city tries to justify it with emergency and protective services, except they fail to mention the fact that there's no tax increase on gas in Mount Vernon. I love the part of the justification where they say that, in the last two year alone, the police have responded to 784 calls to assist truckers who have been robbed or harassed by prostitutes and drug dealers. I dunno, I think if they did their job in the first place by eliminating the prostitution and drug dealing that those 785 calls would fall off a bit.

In any case, because of the local and state sales taxes in Illinois, which come directly out of the fuel discounts we get at the TA, I avoid buying fuel in the state whenever possible. It's just cheaper nearly everywhere else around. In the article above it talks about Effingham having added a 2 cent tax a while ago, and that the price for fuel up there is 2-3 cents higher than in Mount Vernon. And that's true - $2.969 in Effingham and $2.939 in Mount Vernon (as of yesterday, at the TA), so the overall price is actually cheaper in Mount Vernon. (However, with the Panther discounts at the TA, Effingham is 2 cents cheaper.)

Take a close look at the daily pricing and compare the local taxes with the amount of discounts we get. It's about a 25 cents cheaper in the surrounding states.

That is unbelievable. I could see a justification if it were the truckers doing the harassing. But to tax someone who is the victim of the harassment, for calling upon protective services? That's like the town leaving a gaping hole in the road in a crosswalk and charging a fee to the people who get injured as a result of falling into the hole, because they have to provide emergency/medical services to them. Hey there's a cashcow.

I think we may see more of this type of taxation as well as more toll roads. The way local governments think we are making money drving through their town so why not get something from us. Can't tax gasoline as the locals buy that (like no truckers live there) but of course they aren't buying fuel for making a profit. Too many towns and states and such have spent themselves into debt and have to do something so they are taxing an item that gets high volume sales. If they raise property taxes they'll have voter rage at election time.

Turtle... IL is cheaper than every state around, depending on what road you're on. I just checked Dieselboss and certain Loves and Js were in the $2.60s. With IL being one of the highest IFTA tax states, I'll be buying there if I'm going across 80.

I love all this complaining about .02/gal, when there was a huge disagreement about what to do way back when, when fuel was close to $5. I'm not saying the city is right about the taxes; but I guess it just takes something easy to deal with to get ppl off their butts. Not doing business in one town seems simple enough... not boycotting the PA turnpike, tho.

Yes, if you are subject to IFTA then IL is generally your friend. That doesn't mean passing by a certain location is wrong of course and I won't be buying there unless the arithmetic says it's the thing to do. If they have the best cost even after the 2 cent tax then my bank account will say buy there. If the cost is higher than down the road I'll be going down the road.

I agree, Leo. The principle usually takes a walk when the wallet talks. In cases like this, I tend to shrug at .02/gal. If it's cheaper somewhere close, I'll get it there. If not, no big deal.

Yeah, the IFTA taxes play a huge part in all this, but I'm in a van, so the price at the pump, plus whatever discounts I can get, is what matters to me.

As 11/9/08, current state averages for diesel, retail pump prices
IL - $3.241
MO - $2.837
IA - $2.971
IN - $3.101
KY - $3.051
WI -$3.004

Same thing for regular gas:
IL - $2.335
MO - $1.949
IA - $2.060
IN - $2.033
KY - $2.049
WI -$2.249
