Just wondering how many felt the Earthquake this morning?

For those who haven't heard, an Earthquake of 5.4 magnitude was centered on West Salem, Illinois this morning. We felt it here. I was half asleep in the recliner watching the news when the house creaked, and my chair shook back and forth. I knew what it was, as I"ve been in one before, many years ago. I was definately awake.. LOL.. but kind of in disbelief until a few seconds later my chair shook again.

Tho it was considered moderate, it was felt as far East as Columbus, OH at least, as far West as Demoines, Iowa, and as far North as Chicago and Milwaukee. Preliminary reports indicate it was severe enough to cause building damage over to Lousiville, KY.

Our local newcast is still gathering info.

The granddaddy of them all was the 1811-1812 series of three great quakes on the New Madrid Fault (halfway between St. Louis and Memphis beneath the Mississippi), which shook the entire United States. The next time the New Madrid Fault produces such a quake, it is estimated 60 percent of Memphis will be devastated, leaving $50 Billion in damage and thousands of dead in its wake. Memphis, you see - like Armenia - has looked down the barrel of a loaded seismic gun for decades, but has done virtually nothing to move out of the crosshairs.

The probability for an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 or greater is significant in the near future, with a 50% chance by the year 2000 and a 90% chance by the year 2040. A quake with a magnitude equal to that of the 1811- 1812 quakes could result in great loss of life and property damage in the billions of dollars. Scientists believe we could be overdue for a large earthquake and through research and public awareness may be able to prevent such losses.

We returned home from Europe last night so we were up early because our internal clock is seven hours ahead. I was sitting at the computer and the whole house started creaking in a manner reminiscent of the several quakes we experienced while living in Alaska. The news said we are about 184 miles from the epicenter. No damage noted here.

We felt it fairly strong here in Florence, KY. It sounded like thunder...from the ground.

Carol said she was jolted awake in Ft. Wayne. Here in Youngstown I didn`t feel a thing. (Then again a hurricane in Houston failed to wake me)

It woke me up in Saint Louis. Ironically today is also the 102nd anniversary of the "great quake" in San Fransisco.

If it shook anything in Minneapolis, it missed me. I was out like a light, tho.

I live in southern,IL and had been awake for about 10 minutes.

I have been doing some remodeling in my basement and thought maybe I had cut the wrong board and my house was crashing down.

really my wife sleeps in cause shes lazy but it only took her a few seconds to come runnin.

I guess they have closed down an apartment building in mt.carmel about 20 miles south of me due to damages.

I was at the Petro station (now Gas City) off of I 57 south of chicago and I was "definitely" woke up. I was sound asleep in my van and my van started shaking and swaying. I thought these three things. Either some kids were screwing with my van and trying to wake me up, someone was trying to steal my gas...then again, I was in a well lit area, so I thought that it was just "really windy" I looked outside and noone was out there and noone walking around, so I went back to sleep..or tried to then my van started shaking again, so I thought it was the wind. Nothing else happened til I was driving through Chicago I turned my Satelite radio onto CNN (which I usually do) and heard about it there. Never did it cross my mind that it was an earthquake.
