Democrats plan hundreds of reform rallies

Faced with a souring public mood on health care reform, Democrats and their supporters are launching a national grassroots push Wednesday to show lawmakers that the majority of Americans still support overhauling the system.

Reform supporters are planning to hold more than 500 events between Wednesday and when lawmakers return to Washington Sept. 8, ranging from neighborhood organized phone banks to professionally staffed rallies with hundreds of people.

The Democratic National Committee and its grassroots arm, Organizing for America, are helping to organize the effort along with the Health Care for America Now, a group pushing to create government-run insurance plan.

“In these last few weeks of recess we want to demonstrate the energy, passion and commitment that the American people have to health insurance reform so that when members return after Labor Day they know that they can turn their attention to getting this done because they have the backing of the American people,” said DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse.

Supporters have their work cut out for them. Many lawmakers were thunderstruck over the August recess by the anger and outrage expressed by their constituents in town hall meetings across the country. And in poll after poll, support for reform has eroded throughout the month.

But Democrats and their allies insist that the majority of Americans still support reform and have organized the grassroots campaign to buck up lawmakers as they get ready to head back to Washington.

A health-insurance-reform-now bus will travel the country starting Wednesday and anchor events in 11 cities: Phoenix, Albuquerque, Denver, Des Moines, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Charlotte, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio.

But the talk of broad health insurance reform does not mean that progressives have backed off their push for a government-run insurance option.

“We want members of Congress to get back to work and pass reform that means something. We need affordable care. We need real insurance regulation. And we need a strong public health insurance option,” said HCAN spokeswoman Jacki Schechner. “It’s doable and we expect it to get done now.”

Of course it's not the same thing at all. Dems/libs are horrible for discriminating. They call it "affirmative action" and that makes it alright. This is just another example of them renaming, repackaging, rebranding their actions to suit their agenda.

Affirmative action has helped this country in ways you may never fully understand. If you have not lived in a ghetto where the options are limited to say the least you will not ever understand. This country is just starting to see some of the great leaders that were helped by affirmative action. It is not discrimination. It is helping to reverse it. We now have a Supreme Court Justice and a President that were helped by it. This nation has grown leaps and bounds in my lifetime and the struggle continues.

Darnell, no offense intended to anyone but affirmative action is discrimination, just aimed at a different point on the compass. Affirmative action says you possibly may not be able to select the person most qualified if they don't fit the affirmative action plan requirements. I am totally against the discrimination of the 1900's and earlier but I am totally against affirmative action as well. Certainly there are examples that can be argued as prime examples but just as certainly the Texas 18th District Congress person and the current president in no way shape or form can be argued as examples of anything good. No, affirmative action is nothing but discrimination given a prettier and socially neutral/acceptable name.

The current president can't be argued as something good? Give the man a chance it was some good ole boy from your state that messed things up. Things are getting slowly better you will see. You have not lived and experienced racism sir. To act like you know that the President is not good when the economy is improving and he is trying to get national health care for all is uncalled for. I have seen a few of your posts and they appear to be dripping with it. Waste of dna comments are uncalled for, this is not the 1850's or even the 1950's. It is a new age even the dinasaurs knew when their gig was up, yours is here now. I looked through a few of your posts sir and I do not believe we should be talking to each other in real life or here. I was encouraged to join this site by someone I met at a truckstop he mentioned your name, the soapbox n word threads and links posted to rascist sites. He seemed like a nice fellow, he said for me to tell you that the "ad" was in error. Maybe this means something to you.

Fast Darnell, you stand a better chance of convincing a pack of hungry wolves that eating a sheep is wrong than winning an argument about racism here...

In my thoughts...Racism will always be around in one form or the other..whether it be against the blacks, Hispanics, east Indians whoever...until mankind can get over the "mine is bigger then yours syndrome" this is what we have to live with...

Oh yeah..this economy would get better faster without politicians interfering..let corporate America do what they get paid to do...

Yes I agree. Let this country flourish under a mostly free market capitialistic society with minimal interference and you'll see tremendous job growth. No other system comes close to lifting more people out of poverty, including minorities than capitalism.
