Democrats' victory leads to boom in gun sales

Gun owners fear tough new laws;
One shop criticized for 'Obama sale'

When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: "Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?"

That brought his mother, the camouflage-clad Rachel Smith, to Bob Moates Sports Shop on Thursday, where she was picking out that special 20-gauge shotgun — one of at least five weapons she plans to buy before Obama takes office in January.

Like Smith, gun enthusiasts nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.

Last month, as an Obama win looked increasingly inevitable, there were more than 108,000 more background checks for gun purchases than in October 2007, a 15 percent increase. And they were up about 8 percent for the year as of Oct. 26, according to the FBI.

Franklin Gun Shop outside Nashville, Tenn., sold more than 70 guns on Tuesday, making it the biggest sales day since the shop opened eight years ago. Guns & Gear in Cheyenne, Wyo., also set a one-day sales record on Tuesday, only to break that mark on Wednesday.

Stewart Wallin, owner of Get Some Guns in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray, Utah, said he sold nine assault weapons the day after Obama was elected. That same day, the gun store Cheaper Than Dirt! in Fort Worth, Texas, sold $101,000 worth of merchandise, shattering its single-day sales record, store owner DeWayne Irwin said.

One Georgia gun shop advertised an "Obama sale" on an outdoor sign, but the owner took it down after people complained that the shop appeared to be issuing a call to violence against the country's first black leader.

In a completely unrelated story,

An 8-year-old Arizona boy may face double-murder charges in the shooting death of his father and another man at the family residence, The Arizona Republic reported Friday on its Web site. Found dead were the boy's 29-year-old father, whose name was withheld by the newspaper to avoid identifying the boy, and a boarder at their home, Tim Romans, 39.

Arizona law generally holds that a child lacks competency to be held responsible for a homicide. However, Melnick told the newspaper, “We think an exception can be made based on the facts and circumstances … This is precedent-setting. We're going to charge an 8-year-old with two counts of homicide."

I think I feel a wacko right wing conspiracy coming on...

Those of you who honestly believe our guns are going to be taken away by some wacko left wing regime, perpetrated on us by Obama, need to take a chill pill. Let's look at the events of the past few years as they pertain to guns and gun control.

#1) The Brady Bill: This ban on assault weapons was passed in the early 90's and subsequently expired without hardly any fanfare, let alone any real effort to re-instate it in 2004! Assault weapons! ya know? Not hunting rifles or small caliber hand guns! Ak-47s and stuff like that! And they let the ban expire!!

#2) Conceal Carry. I live in Ohio. Conceal carry was passed several years ago with some, but not overwhelming oposition. It now exists in a number of States. If anything, guns are becoming more prevelent.

Not to preach to the choir, but as we know, guns don't kill people, people kill people. I believe intelligent individuals understand that. No one is going to take my guns no matter what legislation is passed. Having said that, for someone to honestly believe that in a four year period, a government, no matter how far left it might be, is going to ban guns and amend the constitution to do so, is not a very sound thinker.
If your candidate didn't win, quit whining about it and start gearing up to encourage voters to see it your way in 2012.

Actually there was a pretty strong attempt to reaffirm the wrongly named assault weapons ban since it affected no assault weapons only semi-automatic weapons. Believe what you choose but you can rest assured there will be major emphasis on restricting guns as much as possible. No, it won't be a rescinding of Article Two, at least not in 4 years, but it will be a major attack on gun ownership. As long as people are foolish enough to believe it's ok to ban an AK47 or handguns other than small caliber handguns we're in big trouble with an administration like we're about to see. No good will come of it. None at all.

Letzrock... what you fail to realize is that the Dems don't go after everything at once. They've been very patient, taking our liberties over the last 90 years; starting with the income tax. Then social security. Then welfare. Now we're looking at several things at once, including anti-gun, higher taxes AGAIN, 401k and IRAs moving to Social Security, bail outs of failure companies, bigger welfare state, eliminating secret ballots in the Unions, the 'Fairness' Doctrine, socialized everything (starting with medicine). The list goes on and on.

And you'll notice not one thing I've listed makes the government smaller. It only makes it LARGER and STRONGER! It only makes our dependence on the government GREATER! It makes our individual freedoms weaker.

It's all about POWER... and not power of the people, either. Can't you see that? Do you want the list above? Do you TRUST our government to do what's right for the country, or for the ones who run it? Ask yourself one more question... Do you trust them to protect YOUR rights, when they carelessly discard rights of those they disagree with?

Today we prepare to fight for our rights. When we lose, who will fight for yours?

Think about that.

T-hawk,
I think you missed my point. In this post I was refering specifically to the gun issue. I am painfully aware of the fact
that the left is interested in big government and keeping people on the nipple. I would think the results of this past election would cause you to realize that bashing the opposition, justified or not, was not effective. I submit that if you bring some clear and concise ideas back to the table, ideas you can share at places like www.Americansolutions.com, an organization begun by Newt Gingerich to develop real ideas to solve problems, not just complain about what you don't like, your ambitions might be better served. Ideas, real or the pipedream variety, are what inspire people. I think that has become crystal clear this year. The better ideas are going to get the votes in the future. Not ankle biting. You can continue to whine, or as Greg used to say you can "get engaged".

LDB,
Thanks for correcting me about the Semi-automatic, not assault weapon thing....

President Elect Obama has said many times he is in FAVOR of BANNING ALL ASSAULT type weapons. The Mccain campaign adds showed it in their campaign adds here in Missouri on a regular basis.

And here I thought it was a damm good post. LOL

I was pointing to your response that left wing wackos aren't going to take our weapons. I was just pointing out that, over time, they will do just that... and went on a rant from there. LOL Sorry, I had just finished a 4 stopper in upstate NY. Hard to get my posting bearings straight. :D

I like Newt; but lately he's been getting into the Algorestocracy of global warming. I honestly don't have any new ideas what we could do, except push the notion that our economy won't grow if the government keeps taking larger and larger pieces of pie. Personally, I think the Dems are purposefully planning to push a depression on us, to gain more power. Devious and unAmerican, in the least. If we pushed that message, maybe it would resonate. But frankly, I think the Republican party has turned to listening to the media; and continues to treat the symptoms, rather than cure the illness.

Tell the people of chicago that they can go buy guns or even own guns........

obama as a total distain for guns and gun owners.

A simple extreme tax on all ammo will achieve the affect he desires, "limited" ability to make use of you weapons, until a total band is in place.

I have purchased 2 new weapons in the last 30 day, that brings my total to more then I can even transport in any plausable manner, and while i have a good amount of ammo, from here on out i will be stocking more and more. I just added my contribution to a small group of shooters for a bulk purchase of 25,000 rounds through our gun club...and thats just one caliber....there will be 4 more purchases of the same amount of other calibers in the very near future....Ammo is getting pricier and harder to get in some calibers, it will only get worse, buy it now, you will need it...

Chef,
What is a total band? What is a plausible manner? What the heck are you talking about?
Why are you telling us how much ammo you have? What are you trying to accomplish by spreading this information? If you are trying to make a case for gun owners to continue to own guns, I want to make it very clear that you DO NOT speak for me. Your recent comments give credence to those who want gun control or a ban on guns. Enough already!!

I don't even want to know what the line "buy more ammo, you will need it" means - but you do not represent my view of responsible gun ownership, either. (And I am a firm believer in the right to bear arms.)

LOL, i guess neither of you are preppers either huh? When TPTB decide that time has come to finally really turn this country over to the NWO, and the SHTF, you will understand that if you haven't stocked enough ammo, along with all other necessities to survive, you will wish you had.

letz rock, not to be a pita, but as a gun owner, do you shoot rehularly? do you belong to several gun clubs? A 25,000 round purchase is not out of line for gun club members to do "several" times a year. Look at it, 10 guys 25,000 round, thats 2500 rounds a guy. If I take 4 weapons to the range on a sat, i am going to put a minimum of 1000 rounds down range, and i go the the range at least twice a month, more then i have the time. So that is not alot of ammo for a person that shoots regularly. As for stocking ammo, you bet i do and will continue and most as "shooter" will tell you to do.

As for what is plausable, hauling 10 long guns in the back of my hummer is not what i consider plausable, 4-5, yea, 10, no. there is no reason for that unless there is a upraising against our government, and while i do feel that will happen, it ain't going to happen tomorrow......

As for speaking for you or anyone else, lol i have enough problem controling my mouth for myself ( i tend to speak whats on my mind and don't care really care anyone else likes it or not, that creates issues for some, guess i am not what you would call PC) i don't need to speak for you or anyone else!
