Deer Whistles

We have not talked about these for a long time and I would like to throw the question out there.

Do you use a deer whistle?

Have you tried anything else that has helped?

How do you try to stay away from deer?

I don't have any. For every person I know who swears by them I know someone else who says they either don't work or actually make things worse.

Come to think of it I can say that about anything (AirTabs, Synthetic oil etc) so maybe that's not a good point.

I keep thinking about trying them. I avoid deer by trying to run with my high beams on as much as possible and I watch the little reflector posts on the sides of the road, if one is missing in the sequence it might be because something like Bambi is in front of it blocking the reflection. And I try to remember the saying "don't veer for deer".

For the people who run them, any preferred brand/style?

I have this hunting hat, that everytime I went hunting with it I never saw a deer. So around Oct. of evey year I have it on..... I also have two per side of the whistles, do they work? Have not hit a deer with them on. They do look up at me when I get close to them. Nothing works if they are running from something.

I hit a deer once in P.A ,
it was a major accident .
the stainless steel bumper on the Volvo was no mach for the deer .
it cripple the whole front of the truck , and blow up one steer tire .

since then , i simply drive slow at night .
55 , maybe 56 , till day light .

alxo , if you hit a deer , call 911 , and get an accident report from the state trooper - indicating that you did hit a deer. it will help a lot with the insurance claim . if you fail to do so , that claim can raised your premiums.
it will also help with your driving record , or late Delivery claims .

as to the whistles , i just don't think they work .
i have a friend way up north . every time he go Duck hunting ,he say that when he use the Duck whistle ... a deer show up ... or a bear ...or worst ... his wife...

I have had a set of these hanging in my garage for 5 years and have yet to see the first dear.I do have a set on my truck and for the investment I think they help..the only draw back is that I have hit 2 coyotes since installing them...a old timer gave me a bit of advice that has worked well for me and that was if you see a dear standing or crossing the road to always aim for there rearend!!!

A previous driver put them on the schneider truck I drove. One deer in 85K miles. The deer ran into the rear tandems, so maybe the whistles saved the tractor. My calculations show that I would have hit six deer if I didn't have them installed. That makes for an incredible return on investment.

Joking a side. The deer I did see didn't seem to acknowledge that I was there, and the deer that were bolting didn't seem to care either. I think deer pretty much know about traffic, and the ones that haven't learned aren't going to know how to deal with a warning either.

My truck came with a black elctric box in the grill that is wired to a switch in the dash that is labeled "deer alert" I have turned running deer at the edge of the road that I know would have hit my truck but something did turn them. In my former life I worked for the Meijer privet fleet, when we installed deer whistles on all of the vehicles the deer hits dropped by 25%.

Key point there. I would be inclined to agree w/ this. They help, but nothing is going to stop them 100% of the time.

We've never had them on any trucks we've driven and we've not even had a close encounter (knock on wood) That being said, since we are smokers, we run with the windows partially open most of the time. I wonder if that has something to do with it?

Have them on my big trucks, no deer hits. Didn't put them on the van and after only three weeks I ran right into one! If I had to guess I'd say they may work.

Deer whistles? Did you send that video to AFV? I've never seen a deer whistle before. Was a good looking girl running through the field?

We have not talked about these for a long time and I would like to throw the question out there.

Do you use a deer whistle??

Why do you ask?
Are you trying to make a purchase decision?

Just curious because this has been on my mind lately. November is known to be the peak month for deer accidents and I have been remarking that the deer population seems larger than ever. I have observed an increased number of live deer grazing within 30 yards of the road and more dead carcasses littering the roads. This causes concern for our equipment and our safety.

I would jump at the chance to invest in some type of device that would put our minds at ease and provide some type of reliable assurance that these incidents would not occur.

In the case of “deer whistles” asking other drivers will most likely yield confusing and unproductive information. Driver’s individual experiences will vary by chance, opinion and type of device.

With this in mind, I have reviewed as many so-called scientific studies as I could find and the results are just as confusing and unproductive. A good summary of the research is quoted below: (DVC = Deer- Vehicle Crash)

“Conclusions
The DVC reduction effectiveness of air-activated deer whistles has been investigated through the use of non-scientific before-and-after studies and some documented research into the hearing capabilities of deer. In general, the relatively poor design and/or
documentation of the before-and-after studies (e.g., sample size) have produced dramatically conflicting results. No conclusions can be drawn from these studies as a whole, and better designs and documentation are recommended for future studies of this
nature. A small amount of documented/published research has been completed in the area of deer auditory capabilities and their reaction to air-activated whistles. For the most part, it has been found that the range of hearing sensitivity for deer is two to six kHz, and only some whistles apparently make sound within that range. It has also been generally concluded that deer did not react to vehicle-mounted air-activated deer whistles, and that
hearing the sound from these devices might be difficult when combined with typical vehicle roadway noise levels. The ability of whistles to produce the advertised level of sound at an adequate distance within the typical environment of a roadway has been
questioned. Additional scientifically defined and designed research focused on the effectiveness of air-activated deer whistles and similar non-air-activated devices is recommended. ”

Here is the Good News! None of the studies have shown the effectiveness of air activated whistles to be any different from the more expensive electric models. The air models can be purchased for $5.95 so even if it does not work the investment is less than a large pizza and is less fattening.

Now, a question for you to ponder.

As one of the most fuel efficient and cost effected teams cruising the highways can you calculate the increase fuel usage that the Deer Whistle will be utilizing to make those sounds?:D

How do you try to stay away from deer?

For most teams I would advise them to be aware of the warning signs and slow down; however, in your case you are already going slow enough.:D

I wouldn't think deer whistles would work very well this time of year, there is one thing on that deers mind and a whistle is not going to stop them from the task.
