deer strike survey

Seems to be a lot of first hand experiences with deer strikes this season. Would those involved or those knowing some of the details be willing to share some of the nonpersonal details like time of day, visibility, type of roads, at what point did the driver first see the deer...?

I slowed to 55 they cut across the road thesecond deer looked me rigjt in the eye, as my fender amd headligjt kissed her rump. She spun into a 360, but ran off into the Bushs.

November 1, 2000 or 2001: I-35 SB, MM 34, Iowa. Just after midnight, light rain, 67 mph (my former cruising speed) I never saw the deer until I hit it. Don't know if it came from the right shoulder or the median. Took out the front bumper, left steer tire, left fender, hood, headlight and pushed the radiator into the fan.

February 26, 2010: I-94 WB on ramp to I-196 NB, Michigan. 02:00 light snow, 25 mph. As I came into the apex of the ramp I saw a deer on the edge of the left shoulder. I let off the throttle. The deer bolted onto the ramp. I eased my van toward the left and just clipped the deer with the right front, taking out the headlight assembly and grill. No sheet metal damage, but still cost $900 to fix.

A bunch of duct tape held the headlight in place and I was good to go.

My "hit" was in my car. It was a Sunday in September, I was headed down to the State Park in NW PA where I worked. I was doing the legal speed limit, 70mph. All I saw was a flash then heard the impact. I caught a sight of small antlers as what was left of the deer sailed off into the ditch. The car was totaled. I had one payment left on it.

I've hit 3. Last Oct., about 0100, 30 miles west of the Perrysburg truck stops on the Pike. Like Moot, (and don't we all strive to be just like Moot), I didn't see it 'til it was past too late. I saw the top of its head about a nanosecond before impact. About $4,200 in damage, but the truck was still drivable.

I just barely clipped one with my pick-up back in '91. No damage, dead deer.

Got one in the mid-eighties while driving a CL-9000 cab over.

Anyone using those deer whistles? Do they work? Does the frequency mess with dogs?

There is no independent scientific evidence that they work. They did a study in PA when we lived there. They put them on every other State Police car in all regions of the State. After a year there was no difference in the rate of deer/car crashes between those with or without the whistles.

I know that the whistles are supposed to be an annoying frequency to the deer. Are they irritating to dogs? I might wanna put the pup back in the truck sometime.

This morning I 78 westbound mile marker 3 in New Jersey about 9 45 am motorcycle hit deer around 70 mph deer ended up dead in right side ditch , motorcycle tumbled down the road ending up in middle of the road , driver flew in the air and tumbled down the road ending up in the left lane. I stopped and called 911, went to assist the driver, lucky for him he was wearing helmet and heavy jacket and blue jeans he was dazed for minute or two. Looks like only visible injuries were a broken hand cuts on the face , leg , and shoulder

Read this. There are MANY more like it out there. They don't work.

Last paragraph of that artical:

Two methods the institute found to be ineffective are posting of roadside signs warning of deer and use of ultrasonic deer whistles on vehicles. The institute said drivers tend to ignore the signs, and studies have shown the whistles have no effect on deer behavior.
