Got back from up north yesterday. I hunted in a new spot this year. I saw 12 deer first day, all bald. Took a doe. That was the only deer taken by our crew. No snow until yesterday morning.

Glad to hear ya got some meat for the freezer Layout.

Skunked so far for me,,Not a good start here.
Hunting here at the house and have seen only 1 doe so far off in a distance. Have had seasons in the past with-out getting a deer but usaully the group has taken a few.
Not sure whats going on,,Lack of crops in the area,,Not many hunters moving the deer,,Deer herd is down????
This year isnt shaping up to well for me but there is still alot of season left.

It has been a strange year to be sure. The herd is down where we hunt, not sure what is going on over where you hunt. I only saw one hunter where we were hunting. That is strange it itself. Kinda nice. Just my brother and I hunting in a nice stand of hardwoods and and older cut over.

Mrs. Layoutshooter had "instructed" me to bring home a deer. We were out of venison. I had a herd of 7 "baldies" come into the stand at 08:10 first morning. The milled around, feeding, where I could not get a shot for about 5 minutes. The "lead" doe finally moved into a "hole" in the trees where I could get a shot. One shot, one deer. The old '06 did it's job.

Smart Lady ya got there,,you did your part now ya gotta get her to prepare it so ya can have some in the truck with you folks..
Other then taking sausage with ya,only decent way I have found is to use about 2 lbs of grind (burger),,Brown it up at home then use it as a sandwich spread using what ever ya like to season it. Once the burger is browned up it keeps preety good in the fridge while on the road.

We have a small freezer on the truck. We carry a few venison steaks, burger etc. She will do more when we are home over Christmas. I hope to get over to my friends place during late doe season. One more would be nice. Till then, I hope to get a few more ducks in the freezer.

As I am not a hunter, this may be a stupid question, but what are bald deer? Deer with no hair?

LOL! Not a stupid question. It is hunter "slang". Bald mean no antlers. That would either be does (females) or button bucks (young, before they can grow antlers). All deer are " bald" for part of the year. Bucks old enough to grow antlers drop them in Jan or Feb every year (depending on where they live) and then grow a new set over the spring and summer.
