Dead Cat and a Chevy Van

I have to replace a cat on the 99 chevy express van 202000 miles. Check engine light is on again. Picked up 2 universal cats just in case but my mechanic said I only need the right one. Do I need to replace both so it works right or am I OK if I just do one? Each pipe is sepparate from the exhaust manifold to the muffler so I am not too worried abbout back preasure, although with the computer and emissions will replacing only one affect performanceand milage? On the same token I dont want to replace a working cat.

Thanks.

I already have both anyway I figured if theyre expected to lats 80 to 100K at 202K the other one is on borrowed time anyway.
Besides, knowing my luck it will come back to bite me in a couple weeks.

I have a 96 Dodge Dakota 2.5 4 cyl, stock. Melted the guts two factory cats in two years and under 20,000 miles replaced with a Walker high flow cat and this one has 14 years and no problem.

a pair of universal 2 /12 inch high flow cats will cost me abbout $225 bucks. Can I strap clamp these on or do I need them welded in? I like stainless steel band clamps they do an awsome job at sealing with most exhaust apps and wont ruin the tubing.
