Day vs. Night

I read the slow time of year thread with interest, and just had a curious question. What percentage of your driving time is at night? What percentage is daytime driving for any given week approximately?

Right now I run from 10pm-midnight till I get back in the morning from 8-10am.

I prefer to run nights. I pick up the days assembly and take it to the next plant for their next days operations. And on and on and on.

I would say almost all my loads are afternoon pick ups with early morning delivery's. I hate it to cause after 3am no matter how much sleep i get im tired.

I understand what your saying. I run the same route 6 nights a week, 540miles a night. I got into the habit of stopping at the state line rest area and doing a 20 minute:D power nap. Works good for me and I look forward to it, it's almost like a drug.

Mostly the same as Chris: afternoon pickup, am delivery. I've found that listening to an interesting audiobook will get me through most of the night, [when I'd rather drive anyhow], it's the morning sun that bothers me - especially when combined with big city rush hour. Then, I'll try to get off the road for a nap.

During the summer, I prefer to drive nighttime, but it's not what I prefer, but what the customer wants...

I would have to say I see a lot more sunrises than sunsets. I usually take my naps around the time the sun is going down.

My tractors prefer nights due to revenue. Our other trucks prefers days. We accomadate the customer regardless of the hour.

I can never have enough weekend trucks!!

I've been in expedite longer than I like to admit.Almost all my loads originate in the afternoon, mainly because, shippers don't use expedite 'till they have no other way to get their freight there on time. This is because, either freight isn't ready 'til then,or they can't find a regular carrier to take the load.THere are times when we get a morning pick up,but it isn't dispatched 'til late in the afternoon.

CharlesD, What % of the loads dispatched by your company are in the day time? It would be great to run about 400 miles a day and be safely tucked into your sleeper at 2200.

I was joking. I'm off the road now, so all the driving I do is during the day...grocery, post office, church, etc.

MOST of our loads pick up during normal business hours, Monday thru Friday. They do often run long distances that require night driving. So far this year we have not done all that much yet.

majority of my calls for loads were late afternoon and evening, so mostly night driving for me too! though I've had a few day driving trips too!

seems most of my driving is at nite. Pick up late in the evening with a delivery early the next day. I do like it this way, seems to have a lot less of the DOT around, :D
