Yes, time on my hands too. I've been wondering what kind of alternate careers people around here have. From passing comments I think there are at least writers, stock traders, reservists...? One of my alternate titles is "artist". I'm a part member of an artist-run gallery. My time off is at the gallery. Time on the road helps generate ideas. And at a couple layover locations I've accumulated tools and supplies for remote studio work. How do you make your other jobs work?

I am one of those IT 'experts' that sit in the basement um... office and type away. I do a lot of web development work for charities but it don't pay the bills. I branched into building blogs for people who have stories to tell but can't/won't/don't know how to set them up. I have one right now in progress that is for a lady who wants to write about her life underground running from her crazy husband. No one would do the work because they are afraid the guy will find them.

I am sort of a writer, not good as I want to be but I do do work for others who want to be writers but don't want to learn or put an effort into (ghost writing). I do technical stuff, reviews (a lot of them and starting to do them for my sites) and of course political stuff. Like I said I am not good as I want to be so I do have a person who is my editor and behind all good writers are editors. She is an editor at Simon and Schuster and has been a great help.

And then I am a wood butcher, more or less an artist at it. I have a line of Harley wood products I give to two charities to sell when they have their sales and really seriously thinking about doing that part time in the truck. Harley was one of the worst companies I worked with on the use of their logo and because it is for charities, they contracted with Harley to use it at no cost.

Sorry, I get carried away..... it is not dual careers but many.

I wish it was a career for me, but I play piano. Don't think I can work on that too much in the truck...lol. Probably wouldn't be much room

I think about playing a lot though....really miss it sometimes. The keys are like built in therapy. They do have these weird things though that are a full keyboard that folds up so you can store it, kind of like a mat with a keyboard on it. Not sure how it sounds, but I think it would do. A friend of mine had one.

I have a degree in computer science while Nicole has a degrees in commerce/business adminstration and is a CGA.

We drove truck hauling super B potty belly chip trailers loaded with wood chips during the summers away from university for Nicole's father and had a blast doing it.

Years later after graduating and working in our respective careers we made the decision to come back into the fold, so to speak, and came back into the business. We've had our own authority/customers and do our own version of expediting with a custom rig based on a Kenworth T-800. Heck, *all* the rigs in the fleet are T-800s. We've also assisted around the business as the need arose.

In the next few weeks we will be coming in off the road to assume management roles in the business as Nicole's father gradually cuts back into retirement. So far, I don't feel as though I have really worked a day in my life!

I work as almost-full-time chauffeur/town car/ bus jockey and,
more importantly, have the pleasure of being the grandfather of
ELEVEN!! It's another "career" just keeping up with birthdays!

I am not dual at present, but am retired with 33 years service from BellSouth (now AT&T). Expedited for 2 1/2 years before back problems have me sitting it out for awhile. Can't wait to get back to it.

I have a paralegal degree so in my "spare" time, I help other owners to write their contracts and do other stuff like that.
I love to write and have been working on a book about our experiences on our life on the road. It'll never be on the best seller list but that's ok. Just seeing it in print is good enough for me.

I love this post. Interesting to see what some others do. I work full time at a supplier for Toyota and others. Looking forward to becoming an expediter. Lot to learn.

I wear many hats right now. The biggest hat is of course expediting. When I was laid off form a driving job in Michigan (that was related to the auto industry), I found A. Blair on this site. My Dad drives for the black cats, and told me about the site. I also wear a production hat. I do individual shows and touring doing lighting, sound, video, ect. Doing that got me into doing video pre and post production. Recently I was given another hat to wear. I was asked to do web design and IT work for a local non profit. My down time on the road consists of taking care of the network and computer problems. And if I get an extended layover (like now, been in Dallas for two days now) I work on the web site. I think I may have room for at least two more hats, so I"ll be busy.
