Be sure to disconnect your battery (batteries) BEFORE you go poking around behind your dashboard. There are a lot of fragile circuits behind there that are easily damaged. Since this is new to you, take it slow and easy. If you need to reconnect a battery to test a circuit, do so only after you have thought through your next move and have assured yourself that what you are about to do won't short something out.
If you take it slow and easy, and think through your next move before doing it, you'll be fine. With that approach, the worst that will happen is you will have opened up the dash, looked around a bit, learned a thing or two, and determined that this a job for a professional. Best case is you will successfully fix the problem and you'll feel proud of what you just did.
If you proceed with haste, you may cause additional problems and expense that could have been avoided.
