Here is the link to the new Dan Rather report:

Dan Rather Reports 436-Truck Talk

I am in the process of listening to this report that is broadcasting from Willy's Place in Texas

Here is the link to the first Dan Rather report that caused all of the comments:

Dan Rather Reports - Queen of the Road

"Safety can very strongly be predicted by pay" 48 minutes and 40 seconds into the program 436-Truck Talk the Economic professor made this statement. I agree. What has happened to our industry has caused a downturn in quality and character in our business. I am tempted to state on reason for refusal "UNSAFE PAY" the next time I get an offer @ .55 cpm for a "C" unit 22' box class 8 truck.

TeamCaffee, thank you so much for bringing this one to EO.

Even though Rather is an idiot, I am thankful that he did this.

As I said TRAINING is poorly done and getting a license is tooooooooo easy and endangers all of us.

Thanks Linda/Bob.

Yes thanks. However, it seems her "poor training" didn't keep HER outa the truck endangering the "world". There truly IS something wrong with the sensationalism some news organizations stuff up our apertures. Whats wrong with asking the complainer why she didn't buck up [in the interest of safety], and not drive?? Kinda funny (not), I guess.

But, we all know, that some of us shouldn't be on the roads.

There is little doubt that SOME truck driver training schools are possibly up to par. Having said that, there are MANY out there who graduated from those schools, KNEW that they had at best, a FEW basic skills, and do well anyway.

NO MATER how bad the school, how bad the instruction, it STILL comes down to YOUR responsibility.

Here's a thought. Are the roads "safer" now than they were before the government was involved? I'm not talking about HOS regs, I;m talking about the CDL. Did CDL mills exist when a driver was taught by another experienced driver.
I haven't been able to watch the entire video because my internet signal is so bad. What I did see...focusing on CRST training? The woman now drives for Covenant? Holy cow, lets go to the worst in the industry to get our information.

More Regs ? , Heck no .
but they will go 4 it anyway .
and when they do regulate driver training ,
pay attention , they will not fund it .

why not reward safe experience truckers , by lowering the standard of those with safe long record ?
but no , they will weed the experience truckers out , do to new health standards ,(that have nothing to do with safety)
why not let the safe truckers do more of the driving .

i find it amusing ,that the first time i hear Experience truckers involved in larger accidents - it comes from a large carrier that don't have many of them ... (don't expect a link to a study...)
wonder if the insurance Co. will agree on this one .(imagine that - 'your annual premium have raised 30% , because our records show that you hit the 8 years experience level'...)

BTW , good find Linda .

Common sense regulation is what a republic is all about. People will always take advantage of others, no matter the cost in lives, to make a buck. That's where the law needs to step in. In this case, the government needs to turn a deaf ear to the ATA lobbyists, and mandate some serious doo-doo on training. Maybe then they can create some reasonable HOS rules.
