D trucks, What do you do?

OK I'm getting just a little jealous of you van drivers. So much in fact that I've considered going to a van. We D guys aren't as welcome in state parks, shopping malls, camp grounds and such. So D drivers what do you do for fun and recreation on the road. Frankly I'm sick of sitting around truck stops. Maybe I'm being too much of a weenie and I should get out more.

I saw a FECC D unit on the Innerbelt(I-90) through Cleveland this afternoon that was towing a Ford Ranger pick up. Kinda surprised me as I had been having thoughts along those lines since the motorhome season has picked up.

That's an easy way to gain some mobility on lay overs.

I am sorry. I just do not get this at all. It is me I guess because there seems to be so much talking about this sitting thing. How much sitting are folks doing that this gets to be so much of a problem? Are folks down so much that they would go through pulling a vehicle and put up with the hassle of unhooking at every pick up and drop? I am missing something. I have to be. Oh well. When I was out there I had down time for rest, maybe a movie or something, shower and laundry. Now I am in this dedicated thing so it is not a problem at all but it never was an issue to me. Are things this slow?

It's not at all unusual to sit in a truck stop at least 24 hours while waiting for a load only to call dispatch and have them say stay there were bidding loads for you. Next day you're still there. It could turn into a 2 or 3 day stay if you listen to dispatch. I try to make note of those locations and not return. Still that leaves the question. What do you do with all that time?

I guess I've been fortunate because after sending POD usually by the time I drive to a truckstop and take care of my business, prepare a meal, take a nap and do a little reading they are pinging me for another run. I will often get out and walk the lot and if I see another expediter without curtains drawn visit a little while and then continue my 'constitutional' around the lot.

I also have learned where several Fazolis are with lots close enough I can park in for when I want great sphagetti. Walmart, Meijers, Target and Kroger almost always have a truck friendly lot as well as the outlet malls along most routes. Some of those have theaters in them now. It's not as convenient in a D but it's workable most of the time and the few that post no trucks are hurting themselves and not me, my money spends equally well elsewhere.

Things we've done with a D-unit:

1. Park at a commuter train station and take the train into Manhattan for a Saturday exploring the sights.

2. Drive into Everglades national park, park in the RV lot, take boat tour.

3. Park on street a few blocks away from Space Needle in Seattle. Walk to that park. Enjoy fine dining atop the tower.

4. Spend night parked in RV spot in New Mexico state park overlooking Rio Grande River.

5. Spend night miles deep in a national forest in Oregon.

6. Park near warehouses in New Orleans, just a couple blocks from tourist attractions. Spend day exploring French Quarter.

7. Park on street or in lots near museums and art galleries that we've toured.

8. Park in hotel lot in Las Vegas. Walk two blocks to casinos that are connected by train.

9. Park in truck parking area at Mall of America in Bloomington, MN (nation's largest shopping mall).

10. Park in lot (paid for four parking spaces) at Santa Monica, CA. Spent day on Santa Monica Pier and adjacent attractions.

11. Parked where SUV's pulling boat trailers park in Tampa, FL. Spend day on beach.

12. Parked in lot at Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY and toured the museum.

13. Spent night parked at marina in Connecticut, 50 yards from shore, 20 yards from marina showers that we were given permission to use.

14. Parked in shopping center malls for shopping and movies.

15. Parked in RV parking area in Flagstaff, AZ. Spent day touring the local shops there (VERY COOL Town!).

16. Parked in public library parking lots while spending the day inside the library reading the periodicals, doing industry research, reading up on that town's local history, or just using the library's tables or study booths to do our business paperwork.

17. Parked in lot at our home church while under load. Had picked up load day before near home. Had time to stay a bit before cross-country drive to the delivery. Walked out of church and rolled on the load immediately thereafter.

18. Spent nights in Wal-Mart or 24-hour grocery store parking lots (with management permission).

19. Spend nights parked at shipper or consignee locations.

20. Enjoyed numerous scenic drives in conjunction with freight runs, seeing things like Utah salt flats, both oceans, interesting caves into which we drove the truck to deliver, mountian views, New England autumn drives, east and west coast ocean sunrises and sunsets, etc.

21. Spent many nights at truck stops waiting for loads.

22. Pass time in truck reading, writing, surfing the web.

23. Pass time around the truck doing minor maintenance, keeping it clean, keeping our freight handling equipment organized and in good repair.

24. At truck stops, strike up conversations with other expediters either over coffee, over a meal, or around their trucks to give/receive truck tours (for new ideas) and talk shop.

25. Spend countless hours in stop-and-go rush-hour traffic jams. While one of us drives and listens to satellite radio, other reads, sleeps, surfs web, etc.

Note that while we've had a lot of fun in the D-units we've driven (truck owned by fleet owners), we've never once gone out of service or turned down a load to take in a tourist attraction. That stuff can be worked in between loads.

At this moment, we're parked at a Love's truck stop in Kentucky waiting for a load. Have been here since about 10:00 AM. Spent the day sleeping after the overnight run that got us here. Also tended to the truck and spent an hour or so on phone chatting with friends.

Well I'm getting a lot of practice in keeping myself busy. Last month was horrible and this month is well on it's way to being the record bad month I've ever had. This keeps up and I won't be able to afford the computer games that help me to pass the time. Someone send me some cheese for my whine.

It is totally different being a solo and being alone than a team especially with the luxury of your spouse. You can't get to far from the truck unless you pull yourself out service right? And if your solo your not exactly out there to entertain yourself as your goal is to make $.

Now if I lived to live on the road and had no committments than have at it. We have to think that we may be underload with in hours so that limits you to movies, malls, 1 mile one way walks (2) miles at the most, some museums, libraries, and I really want to do this but do not know that you could get a cell phone in one, just sit in a court room for a day in one of those small counties next to a bigger city.

Being solo has its challenges but still beats being a team with someone you do not know or might not get along with.

Being on the road with my nephew has its advantages. He had no prob when I woke him up at Fort Donelson battlefield, while we were on a load. That seems the only reasonable time to get away from the truck... while we're on a weekend run.

Our next thing will be to get a couple of bikes hooked up in the box so we can actually tour the places we stop at.

Yes. Driving team with your spouse has many advantages solo does not have. Though, I know some solo drivers that believe solo driving has advantages of being away from spouse. To each his own. And as you correctly point out, same-household teams are more stable than other teams formed by two people that do not love each other.

All tourist and recreation and family visits we've done, we've done either within 10 minutes distance from the truck and ready to roll, or we've done while in service and predispached on a load when we know pickup will be a day or two away. We've never once gone out of service or turned down a load for the purpose of tourism or recreation. We do go out of service to go home at Christmas.

the ta in downtown nashville is a free lot now and its a 10 or 15 minute walk from music row and all the cool stuff in nashville its about a 5.00 cab ride one way. u can also park in the rv,bus and truck parking at bass pro shops in nashville which happens to be right next too the grand ole oprey. just a couple of ideas. hawks idea about the bikes is a good one to ive been thinking about that to the whole towing the car thing seems like more hassle than its worth thoe only towing i want to do is the boat to the lake as often as i can

I've been to the downtown Nashville TA. You can see the Titan's football stadium from there. I think we may pay a visit when the Seahawks are in town in December ;-)

I go through that area of Nashville frequently on my way to and from Tullahoma,TN and I wasn't even aware there is a T/A downtown!!

I think I'm distracted by the Bell South building. I keep expecting it to change (like the old "Transformer" toys) into something. A construction machine would be cool, it could finish the highway work on the North side of town and then head into KY and smooth out I-65!!!!

My sweetie (co-driver) and I have bikes with us and each time we know that we will be laying over somewhere, I look up a bike path. Most towns have places to ride. We have even found some great off road trails, like in Memphis, TN and Bloomington, MO.
I do admit that after being in the truck all day++, it takes quite a bit of effort to get our butts out and set up the bikes. But afterwards it feels so good to know that we did do something to get the blood circulating again and the heart pumping.
