Could be if he is a driver and not the owner of the truck. Maybe he doesn't pay for fuel. Don't know van drivers who would do it for that much.

Hard to say without knowing what is counted in that figure.

Ouch. I know my truck doesn't even crank up for anywhere near that.

Maybe, just maybe that is the net figure that he pays himself out of his gross.

When talking to other Owner Operators about cost per mile we have found no one seems to talk the same language. We like to know what our cost per mile is for just the average cost of fuel then we also like to know our cost per mile with all expenses figured in. That number includes all costs to the truck including our pay and cost replacement on the truck. Once we figured the bottom line for our cost per mile it made accepting loads so much easier!

If some one has a bottom line of .54 it is hard to imagine that number has anything but the very basic truck expenses.

Sounds like that's his total take home... after fuel and expenses. I don't know anyone who could run for .53/mi. Even Mexicans have to eat and fuel.

sorry I cannot resist but when they let the Mexicans cross the border into the states we are all going to see the rate per mile dive headfirst into the basement, the only winners will be the companies that outsource to them and they are going to be smiling all the way to the bank and as far as eating, beans while going up in price are still cheap, even feeding the 5 or 6 people that will be living in the truck, and fuel how much does a 6 foot hose and a 5 gallon gas can cost???

A driver talking about a CPM of 53c a mile is just talking of what it costs to move the truck before driver pay, profit and replacement cost. You need to know fixed costs and variable. For instance variable such as c-link, insurance, truckpayment, the more miles you run every month the less cost per mile.
The fixed cost such as fuel and wear and tear stay the same. For instance out here in Calif with fuel at $3.00 a gal. and my truck getting 10mpg I know my cost is 30c a mile for fuel and wear and tear I usually figure at 10c a mile. So I can say my cost per mile just to move the truck is 40c a mile.
Now say a team has a $1600 a month payment and drives 16,000 miles a month thats 10c a mile. A solo driving 8000 miles a month would have a CPM 20c per mile.
As far as the 53c scenario, lets say you have a $1600 truck payment per month, 16,000 miles equals 10c a mile
$400 insurance equals 2.5c a mile, fuel 30c a mile, wear and tear 10c. That is the 53c, now you have to figure what you're time effort and replacement cost is worth.

Jack Dixon... Thanks for the post. Well thought out and made sense. When fuel prices can be 50 cents difference depending on your location, it can be difficult to do anything but guess-ti-mate. I figure about 50 cents for fuel and real time expenses and that seems to work. I try to stay north of $1.50 per loaded mile, but increased deadheading has really changed bottom line and Landstars new logging standards have affected everything. You need to defintly know your cpm, so you know when to bale out if it doesn't make "cents" anymore..
