Covering Ground and Nighttime Driving

When Diane and I researched the expediting opportunity, we did not fully grasp just how much ground an expediting team can cover and the amount of nighttime driving that is involved. For people now considering expediting, here is how September looked for us.

Note that this is in a straight truck with a certain carrier. Experiences will vary with carrier, truck type, equipment, drivers, availability and other factors.

September, 2007

Sat 01: Drove overnight (one driving, one sleeping) on a run from Florida to Virginia.

Sun 02: Woke up in a strip mall parking lot in Newport News, Virginia.

Mon 03: Woke up in the same place.

Tue 04: Woke up at a freight terminal in Sandston, Virginia.

Wed 05: Woke up in the parking lot of a model home in North Carolina.

Thu 06: Drove overnight on a run from Cary, North Carolina to Sterling Forest, New York.

Fri 07: Drove overnight on a run from Cambridge, Massachutches to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Sat 08: Woke up in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Florence, Kentucky.

Sun 09: Woke up in the same place.

Mon 10: Woke up at the Flying J truck stop in Pontoon Beach, Illinois.

Tue 11: Drove overnight on a run from Saint Charles, Missouri to New York City.

Wed 12: Woke up in a consignee’s parking lot in Toronto, Ontario (Canada)

Thu 13: Woke up in a dark, gravel lot tucked away near the Ottawa, Ontario airport.

Fri 14: Woke up in the Framingham Service Plaza on I-90 in Massachutches.

Sat 15: Drove overnight on a run from Albany, New York to Spokane, Washington.

Sun 16: Drove overnight on the same run.

Mon 17: Woke up in a consignee’s parking lot in Spokane, Washington.

Tue 18: Woke up at the Petro truck stop in Spokane, Washington.

Wed 19: Woke up in a strip mall parking lot in Issaquah, Washington

Thu 20: Woke up in the northern-most rest area on I-5 in Washington.

Fri 21: Drove overnight on a run from Vancouver, British Columbia to Cleveland, Ohio

Sat 22: Drove overnight on the same run.

Sun 23: Woke up in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Mansfield, Ohio.

Mon 24: Woke up on a street in Clarksville, Indiana.

Tue 25: Drove overnight on a run from Louisville, Kentucky to Houston, Texas.

Wed 26: Woke up at a relative’s house in southeast Texas.

Thu 27: Woke up at the same place.

Fri 28: Drove overnight on a run from Texas to New Mexico.

Sat 29: Woke up at the Flying J in Anthony, Texas.

Sun 30: Woke up in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Boerne, Texas.

I had to laugh when I read this post. I have a friend that calls me almost every day, the first things she asks? "Where are you now?". I also never realized how much ground could be covered in just a few days. That is, unless you're headed home, then of course the miles just crawl by.

My daughter asks me that every night. "Where are ya at?" If I stay a couple days in the same place, for example Indiana, she'll ask "Still in Indiana?" I get a kick out of it every time. Not to mention she's 4 and says every state perfectly. Even tho she has no idea where they are (except Texas and Michigan). LOL

I don't come to to this site very often as I am a private guy and prefer to keep my opinions to my self,but this nonsense as too sleeping atnight is to me the biggest (I NEED ATTENTION) post that I have seen.

Whats next? When we brushed our teeth,when we used the bathroom,marital relations etc.

I have a personal axe to grind against this guy and do not want it to be public knowledge but I simply do not understand how the staff of this web site allow this guy to go on with misleading and inaccurate posts and mundane posts.

Personal implies not public. It would be better if it stayed personal rather than being made public. While some may have no interest in the day to day locations of any specific individual or team on this site others may find it interesting to know what potentially lies ahead if they choose to pursue this career. I seriously doubt anyone is going to take the time to post a day by day account of the times they brushed their teeth for the past month, unless they are the south bound end of a north bound mule. It would be a huge benefit to the forums if everyone followed the wise advice that if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

If you look at the log Phil posted there and count the days that it looks like the truck moved, what happened to the 8 day reset - did I miss something or am I wrong in thinking that there is only two assumingly there should be more at 34 hours each?

Oh, Mike when you brought up the thing about a private thing and not trying to make it public, it went public.

Misleading? Well not what you would call misleading.... well never mind.

Inaccurate? Well not really because you have to look at it from the author's persepctive and from that point it is not.

Mundane? Sometimes but you know if it wasn't for the mundane, we would get bored with Moot.

I got Phil's point that we really have to look at the bigger picture of things of how it could be for a few that are that busy. I would like to think that the Covering Ground and Nighttime Driving thread would be more about the deep intrinsic value that we have in what we do and how we have to go from one place to another without knowing where we end up at the end of the day. See the sad thing is for most of us, there is more overall time sitting than moving and the days sometimes are longer sitting.

Unless I'm mistaken, if enough hours fall off the back end there wouldn't have to be a 34 hour restart on the front end for a team so theoretically there might never be a break after 8 days.

Since MikeC announced that he has a personal ax to grind against me, and since his announcement has been allowed to stand, let me announce that I don't even know who MikeC is. I've never met or talked to him. His profile on EO reveals nothing. He may be an expediter, but how do you know?

MikeC sends me private e-mails from time to time that are hostile in nature but never says who he is or why he feels as he does. If there is any ax grinding going on, you can rest assured that he is the one doing all the work.

I think you have all missed the point of post. It was to show how much
distance is covered and how much driving at NIGHT is done.. so a
person considering or just starting expediting will know what to
expect.

I really don't think it was meant to show you when A-Team was sleeping
or not..it's just the way you want to take things out of context.
