Courier work

It might be expediter type work, but it is not expedite.

Very different animals, indeed.

No it isn't expedite in that you load in city A, drive to city B, and wait for load a to city C but the work is virtually the same. You're delivering LTL freight in a small vehicle. That was my point when I said the experience should count towards getting leased on to an expedite company or hiring on with a fleet owner.

Most courier work is delivering envelopes and small packages not ltl. I was in the biz for years. Sure it can work for experience it did for me. Two different niches but in a van neither is rocket science just two completely different lifestyles.

Did you run a cargo van or car when you did courier work? The company I am with tries to give me only van appropriate shipments whenever possible. Like one or two skids. They do that because they pay a higher commission to van O/Os than car guys so they lose money if they have me do an envelope run.

I drove, I dispatched and then became ops manager so I had a pretty good grasp on things. I also worked for more than one company.

I did courier work for a local co. in Houston. In one day I drove over 300 miles, I spent a whole daylight (it was summertime), I had only large loads, and at the end of the day I realized that I earned the fabulous amount of $120.

We had guys doing office Depot deliveries, prescriptions, matresses, Avon and even tropical fish routes but the majority was still small package.

In the end yes you should be able to use it as experience if your a little creative.

You were at a crap bottom feeder company. I made that mistake with the first courier gig I did. Bailed out after just six weeks and I'm at a much better outfit now. There are days where I gross over $300. Let's just put it this way, my worst weekly settlement here was the same amount as my best one at the first company.

ceva requires a road test in your vch I have given about 3 or 4 road test in a sprinter van
if your looking for ceva what city are you in
go out by the airport in most city they are near the airport

So they want to make sure you can drive your own vehicle? Sounds goofy. Plus considering as an O/O you carry your own insurance so it won't affect their rates if you have an accident.

There's also insurance, who gets sued if you get into an accident. That's why carriers won't allow it.

If you kill or seriously injure someone you can bet the carrier is getting sued right along with you. Many of us that run as o/o buy insurance through our carrier and that's often for only when we are empty. The carriers insurance covers it when we are loaded, so yes accidents very much affect their rates.

In such an event their business liability insurance would cover that. Just like if a 500 pound woman walked into your carrier's office for whatever reason, slipped and fell, broke her leg, and sued the company for a million dollars. The vehicle insurance that their O/O's carry is something totally separate. Does the name of insured on your insurance card say Xiggi Smith or Load One?. Just because you might get a discount on your policy because your company refers a large pool of contractors to them doesn't mean the carrier has any skin in the game of paying for these policies. The exception might be if your company also had company drivers insured through the same company.

There are different kinds of coverages for us in the expediting business. I'll mention a few of them.

Primary liability, usually the most expensive, pays for damages that you cause on others.

Cargo insurance, pays if you damage your cargo. The premium for these 2 is usually paid for by the company that you are leased with.

Then there is physical damage, fixes your vehicle if you wreck it.

Bobtail insurance, kicks in when you drive your vehicle not under load, ie, dead heading home or going to the store.

Then there is contractor protection plan, pays if you get injured on the job.

The first one is like I said, usually the most expensive, the coverage is usually for $1,000,000 and protects the company you are leased on for any of your screwups.

So, even if you own and drive your own vehicle, the company has a lot of skin in the game and they need to make sure you know how to drive.
