Confused as to What I Need!

I am new to expediting. I have a cargo van and will be delivery across the country. No foods, nothing hazardous, and not over 10K pounds. I've been told so many different things and can't seem to find the right answer. I have a million in liability coverage and am operating as an LLC, single member. I mostly book my own loads but will occasionally use someone else.

Do I need a DOT number? And/or do I need a motor carrier number? I went on the FMCSA website and did the help me register, answered the questions and from what I can tell I do not need a MC number. However my friend who does the exact same thing I'm doing said he did the test and he does need one. Obviously one of us did it incorrectly.

Any help would be appreciated!

Are you booking your own loads or is another party finding loads for you? Hope you got yourself about a million dollars cargo insurance make sure your ducks on in a row so your protected from liability.

Just go to a truckstop and find a van or sprinter and ask the driver your questions, you will get enough info to get going. Many expeditors are willing to show and tell all about their setup. It can get to be an open house show sometimes and guys will brag about their setup and you will learn alot, thats it.

In other words, seek and you shall find out, go see the guys that are doing it.................

Didn't we just read that a LLC offers no protection outside your home state ?

Read back at least 2 or 3 years in the general, newbies and recruiter forums. That doesn't mean every word but it does mean read every thread title and all of them that sound remotely beneficial and applicable to you read every word of those threads. You mention 10k limit however you need to read the plate on the door jamb of your van to see what the gvw rating is. If it's less than 10k and you are 10k total then you are just as illegal as if you are at 12k total. Good luck.
