Comparing neighborhood bars

As good as this bar is," said the Scotsman, "I still prefer the pubs back home. In Glasgow , there's a wee place called McTavish's. The landlord goes out of his way for the locals. When you buy four drinks, he'll buy the fifth drink."

"Well, Angus," said the Englishman, "At my local in London , the Red Lion, the barman will buy you your third drink after you buy the first two."

"Ahhh, that's nothin'," said the Irishman, "back home in me favorite pub, the moment you set foot in the place, they'll buy you a drink, then another, all the drinks you like, actually. Then, when you've had enough drinks, they'll take you upstairs and see that you get a little, all on the house!"

The Englishman and Scotsman were suspicious of the claims. The Irishman swore every word was true. "Did this actually happen to you?"

"Not meself, personally, no," admitted the Irishman, "but it did happen to me sister quite a few times."

There is nothing like the food that is served in a local tavern anywhere in the world, and I still hunt them down when traveling. I know of a place in Florida where they serve fried alligator. The local color entertainment they offer can be a hoot as well. I was in a place in Mazatlan, Mexico where they kept your tab right on the bar in front of you, by marking a line with a piece of chalk right on the bar for each drink ordered, and they marked symbols for food. If you had a couple of beers and were there for an hour or so, you might see a juggler come in and perform, a fire eater or a guy playing a harp. In St. Louis I used to go to a place where a guy would come in with quarters in his ears, and tap dance to some tunes on the jukebox. Across town was a tavern who's specialty was brain sandwiches. In In the mountains if Spain, I was in a place that served bull testicles. InTexas, I found a place that had a dart board using bowie knives and tomahawks. In Pennsylvania, I had a bear meat sandwich.

We always try to find the places that the "locals" use whenever we get the chance. Chain food is boring.
