Co-Drivers, Is there any such thing?

I have been in the expediting business for a number of years now. Started way back in 92 with Roberts Express. I have always drove for O/O and finally this last Nov. I decided to try it on my own and buy my first truck. I have been activily searching for a Co-Driver since. I have looked and talked to people who have advertised there driving skills here. I have talked to and interviewed people who I have found though a list that Panther II supplies there owners with. I have actually hired 3 of them so far and none of them have shown up for orientation. They dont even have the courtesy to call and let me know before hand so I can start looking for someone else. I think I offer pretty much the same as most O/O in the bizz, maybe even a little more as I offer a bonus program and also 2 weeks paid vacation a year. I am hoping that maybe someone here can give me a few pointers on how to locate a Co-Driver who is willing to at least make it to orientation. Thanks in advance for your help and in-put.

I feel your pain....I'm in the reverse situation.......I want to work..... I have the all the right papers.....but I can't get a job

Why don't you just hire me....I'll show up for orientation....and your search will be over......

Problem is I have had a CDL-A with all the endorsements since 93 went and paid 5k to a truck driving training school graduated second in my class always get approved for hire by all the major OTR carriers but because I don't want to drive for some mega carrier for an entire year for no money just so I can put on my resume "I now have experience" I can't work in this industry at least in over 26k vehicles

I have a clean MVR no criminal record no DUI no arrests but and here is the kicker......no experience.....having no experience is worse than being a drunk a drug addict or a murderer

I have the CDL I can pass the DOT physical I have the clean record but I can't do anything with my CDL because I don't have any experience

It's like a catch 22......how do you get experience if you can't get hired because you don't have experience?

My only option is to drive big trucks OTR for no money for at least a year before I qualify......only in America!

I'm sorry to bother you with this post but I thought it might be interesting for everyone to read about two almost opposite problens from two different perspectives from two different ends of the trucking spectrum

Tony

Thanks for the interest

Probably wouldn't workout for you......

but then again I don't totally understand this business yet.....

According to Mapquest from your location Dryden MI to my location Portsmouth NH is............753 miles

Total Est. Time: 11 hours, 44 minutes Total Est. Distance: 753.55 miles

Now..... hometime is not such a problem for me....income is my main motivation/consideration....I have three teenagers in need of a college education........and that makes me a workaholic for the next ten years....at least!

BTW....I did send a pre-app/resume by email to S. Rose from Panther a few days ago and I received the following reply

"Mick,
this sounds great. I would be glad for you to fill out a application with us.
Take a look at it and give me a call with any questions.
Fill out and e-mail back to me for a faster response. Thank you,
Steve"

Anyway......good luck with your own truck and let me know if you think this has any further potential
