Chris Christie takes state helicopter to son’s baseball game

The funniest part of the whole story is that the Governor couldn't even walk the 100 yards to the ballfield, he had to have his entourage pick him up in their big black sedans and drive him. The 200 yard walk their and back would've done him some good if you ask me.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie--who has made government reform a major talking point of his administration--is coming under fire for his decision to travel in a state-owned helicopter to his son's high school baseball game Monday.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Christie landed in the state's $12.5 million helicopter just before the game began, buzzing over the trees in left field and distracting spectators. The GOP governor then *got into a black sedan with tinted windows, which drove him about 100 yards to the baseball diamond.Flanked by bodyguards, Christie and his wife, Mary Pat, watched the game from the stands until they left during the 5th inning. The two got back into the car and rode back to the helicopter. According to the Star-Ledger, the game was stopped for a "couple of minutes" while the helicopter took off.

Christie's oldest son, Andrew, was playing the position of catcher in the game, which was held at a high school in Montvale, N.J.--about 80 miles away from Trenton, where the state capitol is. But it's unclear exactly where Christie was coming from because his office won't say.

Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak defended his boss's use of the helicopter, insisting Christie has only flown in it in "limited" instances when his schedule demands.

But as the paper notes, Christie had no major events on his schedule yesterday, aside from his meeting with several Iowa activists who had dinner with the governor in hopes of convincing him to run for president. That meeting was held in Princeton, about 70 miles away from the baseball game.

The trip prompted criticism from Christie's political rivals, who called for him to reimburse the state for the trip.

"Gov. Christie obviously doesn't include himself in his hollow call for shared sacrifice," state Assemblyman Paul Moriarty, a Democrat, told AP. "Gov. Christie must learn that taxpayers cannot afford his helicopter joyrides."

They did say he wrote out a personal check and not that he personally wrote out a check, right?

It was a joke I meant did he write out a personal check or did he personally write out one of the states checks, sorry forgot the smiley face. Actually I don't know that I can put them in from my phone.

It really doesn't matter because as Diva said, waste is waste.

The better question for the people of New Jersey is how much money is it costing them to protect his family?

I still have a problem whether he reimbursed the state or not. It's that he had no problem just doing something like in the first place and then offers the check when the sound level gets too high.

No the better question is why should it be necessary to protect a government official.

Ok, 1st it was not waste...you all do realize that pilots of all planes and choppers are reqyired to maintain a certain amount of "air time" at the controls and as a co-pilot...h#ll they fly around with the things empty more then they do with people in them....

2nd NJ has 2 new choppers and both require the pilots to have "Extra training air time"....

3rd, what the report didn't say was that the ball game was in an area of heavy traffic at rush hour..not all hyway driving but city driving to..the local police asked that the govenor not drive to the field because of the need to close or limit traffic....

4th, he did pay for the use of the chopper, fuel used but NOT the pilots time because they were considered "needed air/seat time'...mandated by the Fed Gov...No waste....but then again, he is a Republican...so i guess since it is "slime everything the republicans do by the left, he was fair game....

This is why you can't trust the news, they need that headline to sell ads. The odd thing is I think you can be better informed reading the threads in the Soapbox here than you can watching MSNBC. I think the website should use that as an ad campaign.

I like those excuses. BS.

Air time in a helio's are gained other ways too.

They need to maintain their proficiency after they do their check flights for those specific helicopters but that doesn't seem to be a "federal" requirement.

Oh and how does one pay for the ride?

Does the state have a billing service for these things?

Yep cut a check to cover the expenses, which should include more than the fuel, like the pilots and so on - the same as if a citizen needed a ride.

Regardless of his political party, the excuses are just that ... excuses and poor ones at that.

Well Polly, instead of repeating every thing you come across and take their word for it to be true or factual, maybe taking time out to look into the statement of maintaining hours as a commercial rotorcraft pilot (theres a hint for you) as an excuse to justify his personal use of a state owned aircraft, you see that the statement is a bunch of bull.

Furthermore, a lot of "conservatives" who have put the wagons in a circle to defend him also justify it with another BS line - he's a father so he had to go and see his son play.

I think you need to relax a bit and stop pulling your feathers out over what I post.

i got a cracker for ya curmudgeon, you post the links from anywhre where they talked about the air hours that you think i "parroted"... I promise you that they didn't come from any news article...thry come from 1st hand experience of sitting 2nd seat while a pilot of a chopped had to go up to get his hours more then one time....

As for anyone circling to defend him, i give a crap...I don't care why he did it of not, he has nothing to offer me and i would vote for him unless he was the only one running aganst barry for the simple fact he isn't a conservative..he is a rino...do i like some of his stances yea, but he isn't a conservative,... so icould care less the fact his it was waste for the reason i gave

Curmudgeon....

And i'll say it here...more people then you might think...no i am sure you realize that more people here then a few think your "stuff" is getting old...You left once, maybe you might want to consider it again...i can tell you that alot of those here wouldn't miss you....Curmudgeon...

Dennis, in all honestly if anything is old, it is the polly syndrome you have demonstrated which you can't get pass. Maybe reading outside of the herd blogs and opinion sites would help and so would expanding your mind to get fresh points of view could help while not worry about what I post.

If my stuff is old, too bad, I'm not going to change nor will I stoop to your level by posting flames against you as you continue to do with me.

By the way, those points are funny because I heard them first on a local conservative talk show and then Rush mentioned the same BS. The first talking head said the excuses in order that you posted them, so unless you are that person, I find it rather hard to believe that there is a coincidence and this is why I said BS. The two Red Cross helicopter pilots and the FAA ASI I talked to about the issue this afternoon both said BS to those points too, they all think that it is dependent on what the state of New Jersey's policies are for pilot worthiness says, not the FAA. BUT they all mentioned that most of the time with a lot of these pilots are done in simulators, not seat time and if it is seat time, it is done in their regular duties unless they have to maintain a specific training, like fire fighting or sea rescue. The FAA guy said regardless what they were doing, for insurance purposes it is considered official state business.

asjssl, I actually am on your side with the Jack thing, you just don't get what damage he has done or the fact that I have no problem with the right to die but the methods HE used that screwed everything up. I understand your point in all your posts and have to tell you I am bothered by others coming to my defense when I don't need that to happen with your comments.
