China Enacting a High-Tech Plan to Track People
By KEITH BRADSHER
SHENZHEN, China, Aug. 9 — At least 20,000 police surveillance cameras are being installed along streets here in southern China and will soon be guided by sophisticated computer software from an American-financed company to recognize automatically the faces of police suspects and detect unusual activity.

Starting this month in a port neighborhood and then spreading across Shenzhen, a city of 12.4 million people, residency cards fitted with powerful computer chips programmed by the same company will be issued to most citizens.

Data on the chip will include not just the citizen’s name and address but also work history, educational background, religion, ethnicity, police record, medical insurance status and landlord’s phone number. Even personal reproductive history will be included, for enforcement of China’s controversial “one child†policy. Plans are being studied to add credit histories, subway travel payments and small purchases charged to the card.

Firegears,

You seem to have a real penchant for insulting EO the past few days. Don't know why you hang around a place you hate so much.

Just FYI, to avoid claims of plagiarism, we ask everyone who quotes someone else's article to post where it came from, and give proper credit.

I believe that is policy on most sites.

In answer to your question, go to www.tinyurl.com . There you will see a box to enter your entire large URL and then click on "Make TinyURL" . Copy and paste the result they give you.

Sir, It was NEVER my intention to insult E/O.
Nor do I hate E/O in general or any specific member.

What I was doing in the above post
was explaining my learning curve.
I acknowledge that I made a "misquote" error.

I do feel that I was "flamed" when I did not leave
a web-address for a quote.(it never happened again)

But, I did attempt to learn from my "error"
I even asked for directions on how to correct my "error".
AND... thanked the member in ADVANCE.

Where is the "hate" in that...???

Please allow me to offer an apology and a suggestion...

APOLOGY...
I'm sorry to have made some errors during my
learning curve here on E/O...

SUGGESTION...
PLEASE stop assuming the worst about every word I post.
You, and others, seem to have a preconceived idea that
I'm your enemy and E/O's enemy ... this is NOT the case.

In closing... THANK YOU of the tip ... www.tinyurl.com

NOOOOO, if I started this , it was not intended to be anything more than a request from above to edit the actual URLs that are on these websites, not anything in Firegear's post.

At one time I had to edit URLs in text files because the length of them exceed more than 255 letters and numbers, one went so far as to be 298, so my wish is to be given the power to edit them down to something more reasonable.
