I have a 2001 express van and I want to permanently mount a cb and antenna. I am trying to decide the best place for the cb and antenna. I decided to go to the experts for advice!

I can't remember the dash configuration of a 2001 so i can't help with the radio placement. I am sure someone will answer that for you. A

As for the antenna, i have 2 mounted in 2 different ways..the 1st on is mounted in the center of the roof. i drilled a hole, use the proper mounts and installed it. The 2nd (added because i will need to pull the roof antenna for a rooftop AC unit) is mounted on a 3/4 diameter x 12 in long stainless steel grab rail from a boat. I used the end cap "stands for the tube off the boat and mounted it to the top of the pass door above the window. It holds a big XM radio antenna, a 48 in cb antenna and a quick relase mount for the TV antenna.

You can get the tube and ends at any marine supply store...

My antenna is mounted on the inside lip of the driver's side fender. I drilled a hole through the firewall down by the parking brake for the coax and ran it up under the plastic trim on the roof post and under the headliner.

I mounted my radio to a piece of 5/8 inch plywood glued to the underside of the roof using construction adhesive, PL 200, Liquid Nails or such. Yeah you gotta pull the headliner but the extra length of coax fits up there nicely. I replaced the headliner and ran a couple of screws through the radio mounting bracket and into the plywood.

You can tap power off the dome light or in my case I have a Shelf-It unit installed AZ Truck Accessories | Vertically Driven Products*Shelf-It Overhead Storage Shelf* and a bunch of power outlets drawing off my aux. batteries.

My last van I had a permanent roof mount. When I bought this van we had a new house with 8' high garage doors. I went with the fender mount so I could park in the garage.

Thanks for the info and pictures, I like the idea of the plywood mount. do you know if the reception would be better on a roof mounted antenna or would the fender mount work as good. How many miles are you guys getting out of the chevy vans, mine is a 2001 with 455k and still going strong. I have put 2 transmissions and a few fuel pumps in it but it looks and drives like new.
