I have used Straight Talk for about 4 years now.
They buy airtime from ATT, T-Mobile and I think Verizon. I'm on their ATT service. It's 45.00 a month for unlimited voice, text and data. First 3 GB high speed then they throttle you down for the rest of the month. Unless you're watching movies you probably won't use even 3 GB.
It's only rarely that I don't have service and I doubt most carriers have service in those areas.
You can buy one of their phones or just get the Sim card from them and put it in your own phone. The Sim card kit comes with 3 Sim cards, one for each network. Just chose whichever one will give you the best coverage.
I just bought a brand new phone from Amazon for 179.00. It's a BLU Studio 6 with a 6 inch screen. Very comparable to the large Samsung phones. I've had it about 2 weeks and love it.
It fits in my front jeans pocket but there's not a lot of extra room.

The problem with Strsight Talk is that they will not roam on other networks. For example, if you have a Straight Talk phone on Verizon network, it will only work on verizon towers. Unfortunately, this leaves you with huge gaps in coverage especially in western ky, northern nc, wv, md. If you go on verizon.com and check the coverage for prepaid phones, you will see all the areas where it will be roaming, meaning that your straight talk phone will not have signal.
I tried the verizon version, but had to get rid of it. Driving north on i65 out of Nashville you loose signal as soon as you cross the ky border and you dont get it back until you reach Elizabethtown. That is a huge 2 hour gap with no signal whatsoever.
At&t and T-Mobile dont work at my house so I haven't tried those flavors of straight talk.

I'm just the opposite AT&T is about the only one that will work at my house.
Like I said with AT&T I don't really have any coverage problems anywhere I travel in the United States.
Since crossroads express operates mostly with text messages and email messages there's really no gaps at all for me.
So those seem to come through better than voice calls even in weak areas.
