RE: CDL Requirements !

CDL for vans under 10,000 GVW is not required by the Dot unless transporting HAZMAT.

Most Expedite companies will require a CDL class "C" to allow for Hazmat loads.

I just read this. You only need a hazmat if it is a placarded load 2000 lbs is not placarded 2001 lbs is placarded. You need no CDL. For a straight truck you need a class B CDL with air brakes if equipment is so equipted and a hazmat endorsement. Any company requiring you to have one is just wasting your time and money. I Checked it out for our neighbor.

Just for your info...Hazmat loads are all different some will require you to placard any amount. So if you are going to haul anything that is listed as hazmat then you must have a hazmat endorsement.

If you haul non-placardable HAZMAT, meaning placardable in amounts greater than 1000 pounds (from a single shipper), but not placardable in lesser amounts, you still have to have a HAZMAT endorsement on your CDL.

Cargo van CDL's are Class C with either a HAZMAT or Passenger endorsement. A Class C without one or the other endorsement doesn't exist.

Incidentally, HAZMAT that is placardable in any amount (inhalation hazards, most poisons, explosives, etc.), generally cannot be carried in a cargo van.
