CDL Requirement for Class 8

Does a Class 8 D size truck require a Class A CDL or does the Class B CDL suffice? If it's related to tractor/equipment could you give an example?

I've been looking for this answer in the archives but when I do a search with Class 8 and CDL it's giving me lots of information on both topics but not answering my question completely.

Thanks!

Team Cozumel;

Class 8 straight trucks require only CDL B. Class A CDL required when vehicle is towing trailer in combination where the trailer has GVW exceeding 10,000 lbs. You can drive a 110,000 lb. GVW straight truck with a Class B CDL.

Thanks, John. I was thinking this was the correct answer but had to make sure.

Wonder if you could indulge me a bit further....

If I'm reading correctly, I've heard of tractors being "stretched" to add a box (e.g. 24') and sleeper. Before the stretch the tractor was used to haul trailors like a typical t/t setup. So after the stretch would this unit now be considered a class D and drivable with a Class B CDL?

That is correct - you would only need a Class B CDL to operate a "Stretched Tractor", provided you do not haul a trailer behind that vehicle, where the trailer has GVW exceeding 10,000 lbs.
