"The TSA has determined that you are a threat to the security of the United States of America"
Those were the ominous words in a TSA letter response to Rene's $94 background check request required to renew her CDL. Needless to say, we were alarmed at this bit of news because it meant that she could not get a Hazmat endorsement on a CDL which would also mean she could not drive for our carrier. Of even greater impact, we think, would be that her name would be included on the "no-fly list" maintained by the TSA.
We appealed the TSA's ruling and asked that they give us a copy of any releasable documents they may have used to make their initial determination, or their follow-on determinartion in the event that our appeal was unsuccessful. Our appeal was successful, but we had some anxious moment waiting for a Governmenet decision.
This whole ordeal occurred over about six weeks, a rather rapid remedy considering the usual pace of our bureaucratic paper mill. The moral of this story is apply early, well before you CDL expires.
