I had a Chauffeurs License and just the other day applied for my CDL A, the lady at the Secretary of State told me that CDL A is just a category and that i had the option of keeping my Chauffeurs License and adding on CDL A category or taking the chauffeurs off at which point it will just be an Operators License with CDL A that is used by farmers and so on. She explained that Chauffeurs determines if your a driver for hire or not, and CDL A is just a category of the size of the truck you will operate.

I just wanted to know from people on here who have their CDL A, is your license as i was explained a "Chauffeurs with a CDL A category" or am i missing something here?

Michigan, as usual, has their own unique take on things. What you were told is correct. In Michigan, you must have a chauffeur license if you:
 • Are employed for the principal purpose of operating a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 10,000 pounds or more.
 • Operate a motor vehicle as a carrier of passengers or as a common or contract carrier of property.
 • Operate a bus or a school bus.
 • Operate a taxi or limousine.

You need a CDL when the vehicle reaches the weight of the federal regulations which require a CDL. Farmers with a tractor-trailer or a truck that weighs 26,001 or more need a CDL, but since they aren't driving it for hire, they don't need a chauffeur's license. What you want is the "Chauffeurs with a CDL A category". Few states have the chauffeur's license for the category between 10,001 and 26,001, and instead just issue a regular operator's license for that, whether you are operating "for hire" or not.
