My wife is trying to get her cdl-b has taken her hazmat/air-brakes and past the written test. We tried renting a commerial truck w/24ft-26ft box w/air-brakes. We are being told they don't rent commerial trucks unless you own a business. Does anyone have a suggestion.

How does that new company J. Wilson Trucking sound?? I don't think they will want to run a credit check or company background check if you are paying CASH. All they will want to see is your CDL's before you drive it off the yard.
I didn't have a problem with Penske when my wife was testing, but that was 3 years ago.

Good Luck,

If your State allows third party testing you might find a tester that will rent you their truck. Good luck!

You are almost halfway there. Air-brakes are just a bit touchy so she should be careful when driving, but she has never driven a straight truck? If so, then try to borrow a friendly expeditor's truck at some truck stop on a weekend. You would need a mid-west location where you will find someone.
You can always rent a Budget or Enterprise truck- the main thing is to drive it, not the air brake part. Most important: learn the parts and how to do the walk-around inspection. The tester will ask what are you looking for and point to the headlight. (Answer: cracks in sealed beam, not just the bulb out). That is where most novices fail! I have a friend who knows driving, now needs a CDL, and virtually knows nothing about a truck.

There is also the possibility that the owner you lease on with will take you as a couple for 30 days while your wife gets her cdl. I know we have brought teams in with one spouse having a cdl and the other having a permit and let them practice in lots etc....Panther is ok with this insurance wise also.....so if you have an owner in mind you may want to ask them if this is a possibility. Whatever you choose...best of luck to you.

another before you go to test is practice, practice, practice. when i was practicing for my class a we set up empty 55 gallon drums the plastic ones and i practiced backing around them. that backwards serpertine can be a pain if you're not ready for it. but the walk around for me was the hardest part because there is alot of stuff to remember. my examier wanted me to point out three things i was looking for on each thung. like marker lights for instance. he wanted me to tell him the color which is amber. and tell him i was checking to make sure it was on,the lens wasn't cracked and that there wasn't any moisture in the lens. when i took my wife up for her road test the lady who tested before my wife took out the fence with her trailer when she was leaving for the road test. needless to say she failed. my wife passed but she was really nervous after seeing that.
