Cats on the road

I really would like one of my cats to travel with me. I just don't know how she will react, at 5 years old, to the change in her current lifestyle.

I would consider a kitten that could grow up in the truck. But, I wonder sometimes if I'm being fair to subject an animal to the confines of a truck. As a human, I can adjust, but what about a wild kitten????

Do any of you have a cat that travels with you? Any suggestions whether it could be an older cat or should be a kitten? What do you do regarding litter? (I'm not sure I could ever walk a cat as I would a dog).

Any advice will be appreciated.

Tanks.

Many years ago there was a woman from eastern TN who was affectionately known as the cat lady 'cause she had five cats in her cargo van. Her cats were constantly getting away from her; once, that we know of, she had to turn down a load offer because finding her cat was more important to her. Her van smelled like a litter box and so did she as that cat urine smell permeated her clothes. Altho we've seen all manner of pets in vans including a monkey, ferrets, large and small dogs, cats and a huge parrot.

One word of caution. You must have license and shot papers for any pet before attempting to get into Canada. Some customs agents want to see them all. We once had a dog which proved to be problematic when crossing into Sarnia. Never had a problem getting into the States tho.

We have two pomeranians and they are a joy to have along. One was several years old before traveling, but adapted quite well. We are not too experienced with cats or litter boxes.
5 cats? ewww! I think you would need more than air freshener!
As listed, you do need up to date records to enter Canada ect.

I agree on the 5 cats. That's a bit much. I was referring to one. Just a buddy. I prefer them to dogs.

I remember somebody telling me about the papers required to cross into Canada. Since I usually go there once a week, that would be important to have. Like I don't sweat the crossing each time, with a cat I have to get him approved, too!!!

Thanks for the replies.

OMG! Now I heard 'crazy cat lady' stories before but that one is the winner thus far!

I quess the advantage of a van versas a house is that you can take the van to the car wash, open the back doors and spray it out.
Still scary:7

RE: What about the monkey people, eh?

I'm surprised no one has talked about the infamous "Monkey People".

This monkey lived in this couple's van. For fun this monkey would dig in it's diaper and sling crap at the first unsuspecting expediter who stuck his head in their window and would say " Is that a Monkey'?

Big surprise for the driver!

Mega-nasty!

Yo Lawrence: I would have talked more about the monkey peoples monkey, but your own terms of use agreement sez we can't talk nasty.

Those nice folks are still around but their nasty monkey, Dougie, is in primate hell. As I recall, Doug was rescued from a research lab where he was being tested for compatability as an expediter dispatcher. He was determined to be over qualified so the lab let him go as a van ride-along.

ewww, that's gross!!!. i would think that would be called a discipline problem, maybe the owner should have spanked his monkey more often. DD

Boy does that bring back some memories for me since I recruited them at Roberts Express. The monkey caused such a stir that they left and went to Landstar where they are to this day. They were great peopleand I understand they have done well !

RE: What about the monkey people, eh?

I spent part of an afternoon in Lafayette, IN with the "monkey people" and Dougie.

If I remember correctly, his teeth had been removed, so about all he could do was gum your fingers and get monkey spit on your hands.

He did, however, possess some razor sharp fingernails and I had scratches all over my hands and forearms for days after that.

I didn't get any crap thrown at me, I guess he was satisfied with the scratching he gave me. Despite that, he was fun to play with, kind of like a dog, but you could never tell if he was playing or if he was mad.

Jeff:)
