I got to go fishing while home this time. Caught a nice supper of channel cat.

Then we worked at the Ducks Unlimited Dinner on the 24th. What a night! The place was packed. It was noisy. It was FUN! The food was wonderful and the money flowed.

It does not get any better.

The catfish season started early this year.

They are in the place that I was fishing 12 months out of the year. I have been fishing that spot, off and on, since 1957 or so. It is best in spring but good all year.

In NY they bury themselves in the mud during the winter and you want to catch them before they eat to much off of the bottom in the spring.

These are mainly channel cats. Do better with live minnows or night crawlers than stink baits. They are active all winter. Warm water from a coal burner.

OR

Try SPAM! Yep, SPAM. Cut it up into 1/2 cubes. Then put it in the fridge for about a week. Turning it everyday till all the flat sides are hard with a 'crust'

Then you get a treble and push the shank up through the cube. The inside edge of the barb should be touching or just inside the SPAM cube. Makes a GREAT bait.

I also keep my baits OFF the bottom. I had a 1/2 ounce egg sinker on. Then a 24" flourocarbon leader. I had one bait float next to the hook.

I have also caught cats through the ice.

Holloway Reservoir on the Flint river just east of Flint Mi. a few miles is a great spot for someone looking to go else where. Put in @ the county or state ramps and head as far north as you can possible float the boat. Look for large clumps of grassy plants and you will rip more young cat fish then ya wanna clean in a single day..Now is great time while the water is still cool.
Just left MS. the other day and ate catfish with every meal. When cooked right its hard to tell which is my fav,,Gills,,Perch,,or Catfish

There will always be next year. You missed a good one. I can't wait to hear the final numbers. The safe was too small to hold all the cash. Every auction and game set records for our chapter and we have already been told that we made the President's 'Top 100' list, AGAIN!!

Everyone else, if you like to fish and find yourself in the Monroe MI area, give me a shout! I can direct you to a few spots for good fishing, no boat needed. There are also a lot of charter boats that go out of the Monroe area.
