tried to find an old thread about this topic, but couldn't. we have several vans and sprinters in our fleet but none have our carrier stickers on the sides. what are the rules about vans and sprinters running decals?

Anything 10,000 and under is not required to have any markings at all under federal regs. States may have different laws but that would be only for vehicles licensed in that state.

Michigan is one which will ticket you without the right signs, sometimes it will be an overzealous cop who will ticket an out of state vehicle but it is for CMVs registered within the state.

If we decal our vans up with company logo's and dot #s, etc., do you think you will be watched a little more by d.o.t officers cruising up and the interstates. We've just never ran decals trying to stay under the radar, but if you think it will have no effect on anything then we'll starting stickering them up.

I think it can work two ways, for and against us.

1) imagine a plain van drivng around at the wee hours of the morning, suspiciously driving around a neighborhood trying to look for the shipper/consignee, but the police/public doesnt know he is an expeditor. He could be mistaken for anything.Stickers give the police/public an idea he is a delivery company, eliminating many possibilities and situations are avoided.Decals are for us in this way of thinking.

2) Being pulled over/in scales by a dot officer, who may mis interpret the dot rules and regulations of what is and what is not considered a cmv can hurt and be against a van at this point.Aplain van may not be messed with as much in this case.Decals are against us in this situation.

Many of you may not been able to figure this out but the chances of one getting pulled over and ticketed for any violation is slim. With the cutting of state budgets, the new in motion scales popping up and the focus on truck safety, vans have a less chance of getting dinged for much of anything including speeding.

I agree with Guido on his first point, the sign gives you a bit more latitude in some situations but on the other hand when you want to grab a bit to eat in a crowded downtown area, nothing is better than having signs all over your van screaming "I'm delivering - be right back"

Boy Greg, I don't know, we have been stopped more this year for DOT's than any. We have had 3 level one inspections and was pulled over, not at a scale, for a 4th. That trooper changed his mind when I showed him the papers from my last inspection in California. My CVSA sticker was still withing the 90 day time frame as well. The truck was even clean.

Naw, I didnt meanit that way, to offend you, I just mis-interpreted youre wording, that's all, my mistake. Post on ! lol.

ME? Offended? No way my friend. I was just sort of joking around. Many in here seem to have problems with my humor. Must be because I lived in England for so long. :p

Unless thigs have changed, Panther has so many numbers on the door it's hard to see the doors color. When I was at their Orientation we were told to cover all numbers, sides & doors when not in service.

I ran my van both ways, signs and no signs. I don't think there's a bit of difference one way or the other. For whatever reason, I guess the perception of being "under the radar", I liked not having them.

I most definately know about some here having problems with a sense of humor, I got warned for calling OVM a stool sample.Imagine that.It is not even a bad word, but an object, and everyone knows how much him and I beat up on each other here in a jokingly way.I even sent him a picture..well, I'll leave that one alone for now or I'll get another warning. But it seems alot of people need to lighten up here, that is for sure.
