Is a CDL required to drive a Cargo Van (Class B Vehical)for most
expediting companys?Whitch ones dont require a CDL if any?I have
been told that a CDL is not required to drive a cargo van but I
am unsure if expediting companys hire o/o without one.I am currently a local courier and will have to purchase another van
shortly as my old one is on its last legs.I've been researching
the expediting biz and am unsure of the cdl requirement on cargo
vans.Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Most companies want a CDL, class C or above with a haz-mat
endorsement. There are some companies that will let you
get by with a chauffeurs license, you'd have to call
around and find out. A CDL isn't that hard to get, just stop by
your secretary of states office and they will give you a
manual to study and it also explaines the endorsements. Most of the questions are common sense multiple choice and you wouldn't
have any problem passing if you studied the manual.
good luck,

I am the Safety & Compliance Director for an Expeditor with 80% O/O's. I do not require that my cargo vans have a CDL. I do have a cargo van driver on right now who claims that the last company he drove for required him to get the cdl. It can be very useful. Just remember that at some point you will have to let your insurance company know that you are hauling hazardous materials (God forbid you should have an accident while loaded w/ haz. - they will find out the hard way)your insurance rates may skyrocket when your agent gets wind of it. So, bottom line is you need to decide if it is worth it to you to obtain your cdl for the haz. mat. end.

To answer your question. No not all companies require it.

Feel free to e-mail me with anything else that you may think that I can help you with.
