Can someone explain to me what insurance is needed to operate a cargo Van ( Sprinter ) as an O/O leased to a major expedite carrier ?

Ive done lots of searching but not seeing alot of good answers.

I see people talking about bobtail / unladen / etc...

They way I understand so far is this. I know I need full coverage on my fan because its new and I owe money on it. I understand that the carrier provides insurance for cargo and liability when loaded. So, where does this bobtail stuff come into play ?

Thanks

Bobtail insurance is for when you're not loaded, same as a bobtail without a trailer.

Most large carriers will offer you bobtail insurance at a group rate. The cost will be deducted on your weekly settlement. Or you can elect to find bobtail insurance on your own.

If you go through your carrier you will need to provide proof of insurance to your lien holder. If you find insurance on your own you will need to provide proof to your carrier and lien holder.

I have been with State Farm for years with my personal vehicles. They would not insure my van because it was a commercial vehicle that crossed state lines.

Try calling CIS listed on the home page under the progressive banner. They can fix you up with the insurance you will need. The insurance I have thru them on my van covers the van all the time so there is no need for bobtail insurance.

Yeah you need physical damage/bobtail insurance and occupational insurance. Also there will be a weekly charge on your QC messaging.

So, " Bobtail " and " Occupational insurance " are separate things ?

I'm sorry if I seem so ignorant of this but I cant seem to understand why anyone needs so many different kinds of insurance on one vehicle.

As I understand it:

Occupational Insurance is Worker's Compensation or Worker's Accident Insurance - it's for if you get hurt on the job. In the State of Ohio it's done thru the Bureau of Worker's Compensation - unless, I suppose, whoever you are contracted with is large enough to self-insure.

Bobtail insurance is to cover your vehicle when you are driving it privately and not hauling a load.

The commercial insurance I have thru my carrier covers me when I am hauling and when I'm not - so no need for bobtail insurance.
