Cargo Space Needed??

I am looking at getting into the business and found a 2006 E350 with only 20K miles! It only has 95 inches of cargo space though. Is this enough? The reason it only has 95 inches is because it has a third seat behind the driver and passager seats and then a bulk head behind the third seat. I figured I could make this into a nice sleeper for me? What do you think?

You'll want at least 102 inches of freight space.

Before diving into this, take a few days and READ READ READ this forum! Go back a couple years. You don't have to read every word, but you'll want to get an idea of what you're getting into.

Good luck :)

+1 to this.

Spend a couple of days reading this site. Its worth it. It probably can be the difference between success and failure.

You need to think of this as a business and properly plan for all your options. You need to decide on a set up, you need to decide on what type of carrier you are going to run for.

Do you have 3 weeks worth of gas money saved up travelling 2000 miles a week, that is 6k miles. @ 15 mpg, that = 400 gallons x $3.75 = $1500. Plus you'll need food money, insurance and whatever life expenses you currently have.

Then there is the potential of running for a carrier who doesn't pay on time / properly.

Thanks for the response..I didnt think it would be long enough but figured I would check on here to double check...The last thing I want to do is by a van that isnt big enough

Why not drive for a Sprinter owner for a while to see if you like the lifestyle, then if you do then look at buying a van:)

If it already has a bulkhead built, just pull that stupid third seat out and move the bulkhead forward. Personally, I never liked a full bulkhead between driver and freight, but it comes down to what the carrier requires.

As has been pointed out, read read read here...beyond that, it at all possible, try and make it to the EXPO America's Largest Expedited Trucking Show :: Expedite Expo 2011 there you will be able to talk with the recruiters that are looking to fill positions and also with active drivers all in one place....

Now, that being siad...I will say this up ft..I own a Cargo Van and a bigger Sprinter type van....yes there will always be Van freight..but I see a chnage in the industry more towards the bigger Sprinter TYPE units....

As I said and i am sure there will be people to bust my butt, but while there will always be Van freight, the bigger the unit you can run, the better your chances are to make it in this business....just some food for thought....

I remember when you said this....

I will state it right now, from here on out, whenever anyone comes to the EO webpage and post about getting into the industry in a CV/Sprinter....I WILL post the link to this thread every single time....along with telling them that those that put the expo on no longer feel they have anything to offer the industry and that they are no longer important to them....and in the future, I will no longer suggest that those interested in getting into this industry attend the Expo....

Yea i was pizzed when I said that..me personally, I tended to say things that i later regret....in this case it was like cutting off ones nose to spite the face...there is no where you can go to get more good info on this industry then at the Expo...

Now if you have a "sharp stick...." I have an eye...:D

Problem is, they don't feel that way, and never said as much. That's an assumption, and an incorrect one.

Jefferson is right: take out the third seat. [Some vans lose the passenger seat, too, for more productive use of the space.] Judging by the "I can make a nice sleeper" comment, it sounds like you have some skills - move the bulkhead forward, or take it out, too. Unlike Jefferson, I preferred the bulkhead, but in your van, it's your choice.
And the Expo is worth the time and effort, no question. :)

I never said you did. What I said was that, "those that put the expo on no longer feel they (vanners) have anything to offer the industry and that they (vanners) are no longer important to them..." is an assumption, and an incorrect one. Was I not clear on that?

Yes that is an incorrect asumption, just the quote had my name on it so I wanted to be clear:)
