Been with expediting for a little while, like it, but have noticed regular sized pickup trucks ( heavy duty) hooking up a trailer or something to it, and it carries 3 cars, anybody know anything about this?
I have googled searched everything cant find any information on it, is there companies that hire you for this, or are you an independent contractor?
If anyone has any info about this sort of business please reply

THANKS in advance

These "hot Shot" folks often carry cars, boats, small RV's, boat trailers and the like. Quite often this is one-way work, but the savvy drivers have a network whereby they serve regular customers coming and going. Some are truly indepentent and others are leased as independent contractors with companies such as this link:

Similar operations are called "drive-a-ways" where independent contractors transport busses, fire trucks, large RVs and other vehicles from manufacturer to distributor.

There is a lot of new and used RV Trailer hauling around the country.Look at Bennet Transport near Atlanta and Morgan Drive A Way. Usually these are loosey goosey operations, revenue is so so but no stress and pressure. Most of the manufacuring of new RV Trailers comes out of Mishawaka Indiana. If you live near there you might find it to be a good deal.

You might want to register at hotshothauling.com . They have over 1,000 members , probably 90% of them running 1 ton duallies , several of them auto haulers . Very friendly , helpul members . DOT keeps a close eye on those 3 car haulers . The weights of the vehicles being hauled must be watched closely or the axle weights will be exceeded . Avoid Bennettt , Horizon , and the other RV transporters . They run about 45% unpaid deadhead .

Talked with a guy last Fall. Does very well his answers were straight on, he was as intrested in my truck as I was in his set up. He hauled almost 100% for CarMax between the lots Texas to the East Coast, roughly $2.00 a mile and no DH as there were always more to be taken to another spot. 100% Independent Contractor.

Ok, I don't know much about this, but I have a duelly and a 51' car hauler in Arizona. How would I get in touch with Carmax and see what they can do for me?

I was in the car business for 20 years and had my own lot for 12 of those. I always kept a 45' 3 car trailer for my own use. Thats why I got my Class A to start with.

Just remember that if you are "For Hire", and you will be, there is a good bit of overhead. Most of the regualar car dealers are not going to pay anywhere near $2 per mile. If CarMax is and you can get hooked up with them though it sounds pretty darn good. I would think they would be using carriers with eight to twelve car capacities which of course is a whole different animal but who knows.

I talked witth a carrier in Indiana,a while back,he said they paid about 50cpm per unit hauled, and was done on ltl bases,so if going coast to coast, you would need keep three cars on trailer
