Is there still a long wait to get into the U.S.at Port Huron or Detroit. We go to Buffalo NY often and since 911 we have been going through Cleveland to avoid the wait at the border. We use one ton vans so we have to get in line with the big trucks.

Detroit and Windsor are having some major issues right now.

According to the local news here in Detroit, some trucks have been crossing the border with placards removed while carrying hazmat loads across the bridge. Then they replace them on the other side of the border.. and now they are suppose to step up on checking manifest to cargo.

They did not say when this will start.

It has not been too bad. Sometimes they ask for ID (driver license) which they never really did before 9/11. Short of that, same old thing. The longest wait I've had since 9/11 was about 35 minutes on Peace bridge coming back into Buffalo, and I think that was due to an evening shift change. Might want to bring a photocopy of your birth certificate just in case although they have not asked me for it.

A friend of mine lives in Port Huron, so uses the Bluewater Bridge quite often with his D unit. He has indicated little delay--most times no more than prior to 9/11.

LAST TIME I CROSSED THE BORDER WAS RIGHT BEFORE X-MAS AT PORT HURON. WAS PRETTY MUCH BUSINESS AS USUAL. HAD TO SHOW DRIVER LICENSE TO CANADIAN SIDE. ONLY SLOW DOWN I RAN INTO WAS COMING BACK INTO USA. THEY WANTED TO SEE A BIRTH CERTIFICATE. WHICH I DID NOT HAVE. THEY HAD A NATIONAL GUARDSMAN CHECK THE CARGO AREA. THEY LET ME GO AHEAD THEN. BUT THE CUSTOMS OFFICER SAID I NEED TO HAVE A BIRTH CERTIFICATE WITH ME IN THE FUTURE. SO IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE IN YOUR TRUCK, YOU MAY WANT TO GET ONE IN THERE. TO SAVE YOURSELF ANY HASSLE THAT MAY RESULT FROM NOT HAVING ONE.

I just sent for a passport renewal about 2 weeks ago. Figure that might help when going in to & out of Canada. Believe it or not, having
an AMERICAN passport is one of the most envied travel documents in the
world.:7 :7

A photocopy of your birth certificate is not good enough. It has to be the real thing or a certified copy. I've heard that you can use a photocopy if it's noterized, but that's hearsay. Lately I havn't been asked much coming back to the states, but quite a bit going into Canada. I found crossing got back to normal a lot faster than I thought it would.
