Can someone help with porn attacks?

Early this morning I was searching for info on stocks.. I chose a site to go to, clicked, and immediately after it seemed to load, another site came up in its place, with 'streaming porn'. And let me tell you, it was pretty graphic and not something I personally wanted to be staring at (or into). If I were a gynecologist.. perhaps..

I'm so upset because there was zero indication of it being a bad site.. and my computers are sitting here when I'm not home.. I have 2 adolescent/teen boys.. you get the picture.

I have my settings set to block popups.. but aside from that, I really don't know how to prevent this type of thing.. and quite frankly, it's never happened before.

On this computer I'm using 'safari'.. I'm not really wanting to test it out on my other computer which has 'firefox'.. I'm not sure if the same thing would have happened with either browser, or is it just because I'm using 'safari'??

Can anyone tell me how to set anything on here so this type of thing can be prevented?

It's not really Firefox or Safari, it's a javascript you picked up somewhere. You can turn off javascript (and not be able to view a snotload of sites) in the near term, as well as delete the cache and cookies, and all downloaded *.js files, but you should download something like MS Security Essentials and have it go through the hard drive and clean out all that stuff.

Yes, I have a Mac and it's pretty new, I've not used it that much yet.. I don't really know what to do with it, I haven't learned enough yet... but I was thinking it must be related to the browser.. as opposed to the computer.. does anyone around here use a Mac?

Are you saying that even if I went to the same site through the same process (google searching for stocks), that the same thing wouldn't necessarily happen? And that it's related to somewhere else THIS computer has been and picked up? Kinda like an STD?

Depends, but more than likely that particular stock site had nothing to do with the porn. It was picked up, like an STD, and it's sitting there on your computer until you get it off. It might be browser-specific, but probably not. Javascripts are often cross-browser and cross-platform, so the same javascript would do the same things no matter what browser you are running. You could go to that site and nothing would pop up, and the next time you go it might pop up. You could go to EO and it might pop up. Next time you go to EO it might not.

You need to get some anti-malware program and run it. There are several Macheads here on EO.

Hmm, I thought macs had a lot less of this type of thing than IBMs. Are you saying that my Mac is no longer pure and has already been messin around? Is there a way to add parental controls.. on either mac or IBM? I had a look around firefox and I couldn't see anything, unless I wanted to list every site individually which I didn't want the computer to go to? But.. that would mean I'd have to know them all, their addresses, etc. I thought there were parental controls for these things. Why is everything so hard?

Consider AVG for your anti-virus needs. They have a free version that is updated alongside the pay version, and it will also scan email, Google search results (shows a little symbol next to pages that are verified safe to browse,) along with the standard AV needs.

I used AVG religiously until MS came out with Security Essentials and was never disappointed.
