Call to Action, cross border trucking

OOIDA is calling on us again to do what we can to stop the Mexican trucks from taking jobs in the states. Do your part and make some calls.
.
.
.
President Obama’s Trade Representative and other public officials need to hear from you!

Last week Ron Kirk, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), traveled south of the border to meet with Mexico’s Economy Minister. During a press conference after their meeting USTR Kirk told reporters that he is committed to resolving the cross-border trucking dispute with Mexico and the Mexican Economy Secretary said a solution "will surely occur this year."

In previous correspondence with lawmakers, USTR Kirk has repeatedly indicated that in his opinion the only clear solution to the Mexican trucking dispute is “pursuing with Mexico a new cross-border trucking program.” At the press conference last week USTR Kirk said, “President Obama has now asked our Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and myself and our Secretary of Commerce to begin a dialogue with Congress to better understand their concerns so we can come up with a sensible program.”

Next month marks the one year anniversary of the tariffs that Mexico imposed on some American exports for our government not allowing Mexican trucks to have access to highways throughout the US. Those tariffs will expire on March 18 and Mexico has threatened to not only renew the tariffs, but even expand them to more American exports.

Mexico’s tariffs have already caused some American agricultural and manufacturing interests to join big shippers in pushing for opening the border to Mexican truckers. The Obama Administration and some folks in Congress are showing signs that they may cave in to the pressure from those interests.

Instead of bowing to Mexico, the US Trade Representative needs to be standing up for US jobs and American interests! Congressional leaders whose constituents were targeted by the Mexican tariffs have repeatedly called on USTR Kirk to fight back and challenge those tariffs, but so far the USTR has refused to do so.

The US Trade Representative and other public officials need to hear from you, your family members and your fellow truckers.

They need to hear how US-based truckers and their families will be impacted by an open border for trucks and drivers from Mexico. For example, they need to hear how truckers in the U.S. must contend with an ever increasing burden of safety, security and environmental regulations and that those regulations significantly increase your cost of operations. They need to know that Mexico-domiciled trucking companies and drivers do not contend with similar regulations or regulatory compliance costs in their home country.

If proponents of cross-border trucking with Mexico have their way, the jobs of all U.S.-based long-haul truckers will be in serious jeopardy.

Please call, write, fax the US Trade Representative and other public officials and make your voice heard!

So out of the 152 people who have viewed this, how many of you have contacted your Representatives in the Government and voiced your opinions, and or copied this article ( as I did)? In addition to contacting the representatives of my State, I also emailed it to every single American on my mailing list who has a voice so they also could echo the concerns of every single American who has a say in this country. It's the RIGHT thing to do people. DO IT

Maybe in your opinion it is the right thing to do, others might disagree with it.

First they came for the Air Traffic Controllers, but since I was not one of them, it did not matter to me, and I did not defend them.

Then they came for the Meat Packers, but since I was not one of them, it did not matter to me, and I did not defend them.

Then they came for the Textile Workers, but since I was not one of them, it did not matter to me, and I did not defend them.

Then they came for the Steelworkers, but since I was not one of them, it did not matter to me, and I did not defend them.

Then they came for the workers at Bridgestone, Staley, and Caterpillar, but since I was not one of them, it did not matter to me, and I did not defend them.

They came for the airline workers, the newspaper workers, the tanners, weavers, truckers, railroad and industrial laborers of every sort, but since I was not one of them, it did not matter to me, and I did not defend them.

Then they came for me, and there was no one to defend me.

Such is my generation

Point taken...BUT..these trucks will still have to pass American standards when in the US....you think states are going to bow to the Feds? I think not....

US drivers can also go into Mexico and chose not too..out of fear or reputation. That is their problem. Do you think a Mexican driver is any less at risk because they are Mexican? No..they do it because they need to make a living....

There is no use for me to write my senators or congressman, they will do as Obama tells them. Shoot, they seldom answer when I do write them. They have no respect for the People. They believe that we are their subjects.

Apparently the roads to the industrial areas are said to be good....now get off the beaten track is different story...it is their own rumors and fears that keep them out....like some don't do NYC or LA...any safer there? Not likely.

Yep, and it will take more then the trucking industry drivers to stop this, It is just another way to bring down pay and benefits. next will be mexican van drivers driving for 40 cents a mile, then you will care OVM

Oh we could stop it if all agreed that it needed stopped and then did something about it. That will never happen.

this all started out ..I was just pointing out some may not agree....I did not say I did agree...but there are 2 sides to every discussion.
My bottomline would be:

As long as these Mexican truckers are made to run to American standards as the Canadians have to do...and bear the same expenses....not special treatment or exceptions.

Then Mexico is going to have to upgrade their entire industry. To include, a cdl program, HOS laws compatible with the U.S. and Canada, equipment upgrades, etc etc etc. Want to bet that does not happen but the program does?

Trust me, this isnt about them running to the same standards, its about why pay an american his wages when we can get it done for 1/2 price. plain and simple. As I have said before, The companies are now coming after the trucking industry's pay, You all make to much and they will find a way to bring that cost down

No different then a Canadian driver/O/O....he needs a load to get back to Canada because by law thats the only way to go..he can not interstate...he'll likely take a load cheaper to get home then an American driver would...it is natural...a Mexican driver will do the same thing to get back to Mexico....Yes it will prolly effect rates going to the border crossings BUT should NOT effect interstate rates....

Canadian rates are pretty much in line with with an american worker, no comparsion, dont think for a min that a mexico driver will not be allowed to drive loads in this country once they are here, this is just the first step my friend, the door has just opened
